MRS. ANDREA H. DAVIS
Weekly Newsletter
April 1, 2016
THEME: Natural World
UNIT: Earth Materials
EXTENSION: Water
Key Measure: Many things make up the world in which we live. Most of the
world is covered by water. We need water to live.
LANGUAGE ARTS
PHONEMIC AWARENESS AND PHONICS: We focused on phoneme K this week in the
beginning and ending positions /ck/. The kids had fun playing the game “Hop n Pop”
with these word cards: Jack, back, sack and pack. In this game the students are
getting exercise which helps the kinesthetic learner. They are able to see the word
family /-ack/ which helps the visual learner, and hear that the words rhyme which
benefits the auditory learner.
SPEAKING: To play one of our table games, the students had to think of and say a word
beginning with the letter that their sea shell landed on. The children are singing the
poem called “Miss Mary Mack,” using correct pronunciation of the ending phoneme
/ck/.
WRITING: Mrs. Davis & Mrs. Wallace wrote down our thoughts on the many types of
water: oceans, lakes, rivers, streams, and ponds. We underlined and circled some sight
words that were in the sentences that the students made up in “Our News.”
LISTENING: At the Listening center, we heard the book on tape, Arthur’s Family
Vacation which is about Arthur’s family taking a trip to the ocean.
READING: These books were available to the students: Harry by the Sea, A Day at the
Beach, Curious George at the Beach, Don’t Eat the Teacher, Barney’s Sand Castle,
Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale, Rainbow Fish: Hidden Treasures, Rainbow Fish: The
Copycat Fish and Rainbow Fish: Lost at Sea.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We had oceans of fun learning about water this week. Ask your child if there are any
oceans in Oklahoma. For the children to continue to acquire experience using maps,
we looked at our world and US maps to find the oceans. We learned what the term
land locked means. We could see that Oklahoma is a land locked state and so are all
of our neighboring states, with the exception of Texas.
SCIENCE
We watched a film strip called “Sharks - Predators of the deep.” Ask if your child can
remember what the word predator means. We talked a little bit about the food chain
and that sharks and whales are at the top of the food chain in the ocean. We have a
great shell collection to explore - it includes a real turtle shell and star fish.
MATH
We had some table games to play at worktime that are helping us acquire experience
recognizing these math symbols (+) (-) and (=). We played a fishy game where we got
points for reading words. First we split up into two teams and gave ourselves water
creature team names. Can your child remember his/her team name? The idea of the
game was to find a paper fish in the "water" that had a word written on it that we could
read, then we turned the fish over to see how many points it was worth. The fish were
either worth 1, 2, or 3 points. We added up the tallies and the team with the most
points in the end won. We are very concerned with good sportsmanship at Jenks
Southeast. We always say a cheer for both teams when we finish a game. See if your
child can remember our cheer. "Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah.....!
ART
VISUAL: The students are honing their fine motor skills with tracing and cutting. They
made some water creature art work using water colors this week.
MUSICAL: We learned the songs, “My Bonnie lies over the ocean” and “Down in the
meadow in a little bitty pool, swam three little fishies...”
MOVEMENT & DRAMATIC PLAY: While enhancing our gross motor skills, we pretended to
swim in a lake when we moved around the room to the record “Sammy.”
