This two/three hour academic credit course provides students with the opportunity to perform
legal work under the supervision of a judge or an attorney and supervising attorneys from the
Loyola University Chicago School of Law, at an approved field placement in our nation’s
capital. This course will examine the role of attorneys working for the federal government, as
well as the role of attorneys as litigators, policy makers and advisors in a variety of public
interest settings. Students will be exposed to the intricacies of practice in Washington, D.C.
The classroom component of the course has been designed to complement the student’s
individualized fieldwork. Classes will be held at the law offices of Foley and Lardner located in
Georgetown on the beautiful Potomac River Waterfront. The course will be taught by Loyola
Law School alumna Susan Poll Klaessy, an Associate Attorney with Foley and Lardner, and
Josie Gough, Director, Experiential Learning. All participating students will have a member of
the DC Leadership Circle assigned to them as a mentor during the summer term.
Classroom discussions and written assignments over the course of the semester will focus on
legal analysis and reasoning, as well as practice skills and core values of the profession.
Professional responsibility, ethics, civility, pro bono responsibilities, and work/life balance
issues will be critical components of the course. The course is graded pass/fail.
