PSJS 250 P5: Social Change through Service Service-Learning Project and PowerPoint Presentation Service-Learning Project: During your service, you will need to develop a “product” that meets the criteria listed below and that can be used by the site organization. At the conclusion of the semester, you will present this product to the class and give it to your site supervisor. Potential projects are listed on the service opportunities handout, although these are not exclusive. Feel free to develop your own project ideas. After learning about your agency, you may develop ideas of ways to improve, contribute, or solve a problem you’ve identified. We can help you develop your ideas. You should also collaborate with your supervisor to determine if they are needed and of benefit to the organization. Chapter 2 in Graham may also help you get started. Project Criteria: Your project must: o o o improve an identified community problem or issue, address a need within the organization, and benefit the constituencies within that organization. be doable within 30 working hours (although the first 10-20 hours of your service may be spent better understanding and contributing to the organization with the last 10-20 or so spent developing the product). be presented to the organization and the class in some tangible form (brochure, paper, PowerPoint, photographs, video) Possible Projects: o o o o o Advocate and serve as a voice for those who may not be able to speak for themselves (i.e. develop a training manual for advocacy work). Educate others through organizing a workshop series, creating programs, designing brochures, creating a video (i.e. develop a lesson plan for teaching a new topic, develop a cultural awareness video). Research, interview, evaluate and write on a topic/need of the agency (i.e. create a marketing or publicity campaign for an event). Raise funds or develop a fundraising plan to benefit and/or educate about a cause (i.e. coordinate a fundraising effort for children with special needs). Conduct a needs assessment of an agency’s clients (i.e. assess the needs of clients who are using particular services). PowerPoint Presentation: At the conclusion of the semester, you will present the results of your project through a PowerPoint Presentation. Please use the format described below. You may work with one or two classmates if all of you are at the same site. If working with others, the presentation will need to be 5 additional minutes in length per person. Each person will receive a separate grade. Format: 1. Introduction: Overview your agency’s mission, the social policy issues it’s addressing, and population it serves. Outline your role at the organization and primary responsibilities. (You can use Part 1 of your Portfolio to develop your intro.) 2. Service Project: Present the outcome of your service-learning experience. Explain the project you worked on, the product you produced, and distribute copies of your product if possible. Include an analysis of your plan and vision for change references Graham’s strategies. Present the problems/issues you encountered, how you addressed them, and what the outcomes were. 3. Conclusion: Summarize your major contributions of your service-learning project. Share with your audience 1 or 2 major personal or professional insights gained through this project. (You can use Part 3 of your Portfolio to develop your conclusion.) Due Day you Present: o o o o o o 2 copies of your PowerPoint (the first sent through e-mail and the second printed with 6 slides per page) Outline of your presentation Bibliography citing your references. Copies of your product to distribute if possible. Your actual product (and PowerPoint if requested) should also be given to your supervisor. Other handouts, visuals, photos, videos, etc. will enhance your presentation and increase audience engagement (but are not required). Other Logistics: o o o Your presentation should be 10-15 minutes in length. If working with others, the presentation will need to be 5 additional minutes in length per person. Each person will receive a separate grade. This assignment is worth 35% of your total grade (350 points) Note: Although the PowerPoint presentation will be graded separately, upon completion, you may want to put copies of your PowerPoint and the material from your product in your Portfolio. Your portfolio will serve as a tangible document highlighting your accomplishments in this course and is a product you can present to future employers.
