Department of History Level 2 Module Allocation Procedures Meeting Dr James Shaw Please note this meeting is being recorded, any questions will form part of the recording 17/07/2016 © The University of Sheffield Why do we do Module Allocations? • To allow student choice. • To ensure a fair allocations process. • For small group teaching – seminar groups of 15. • Last year every student was allocated to at least two of their first preferences. • There will be over 30 modules to choose from; you pick your first and second preferences. We will allocate you to a combination of these. • The module list will be different to the 2015-16 list. 17/07/2016 © The University of Sheffield Module Allocations: the process Wed 13th April Wed 13th April (after meeting) By 5pm on Tuesday 19th April Wed 20th – Sun 24th April Mon 25th – Thurs 28th April Fri 29th April Tues 3rd – Fri 20th May Attend the History Module Allocations Meeting. Module allocation instructions sent out by department. Fri 8th July Exam results released. Registry Services will provide information about completing your registration. List of the History modules running in 2016-17 including the DRAFT timetable will be available. Departmental module preference forms open at 9am Wednesday and preferences must be submitted midnight on Sunday. Department allocates students to modules. History Module Allocations published on History Online (MOLE). University Online Module Choice system opens. SINGLE HISTORY – You will not need to complete the University Online Module Choice process, unless you are requesting an unrestricted module. DUALISTS – You will need to complete the University Online Module Choice process; your History modules will appear, however you will need to submit modules from your dual department. 17/07/2016 © The University of Sheffield Level 2 Modules Core modules – HST202: Historians and History (all students), available in first semester only. Taught through lectures / seminars / office hours Document options – available in first semester only; detailed studies of a historical theme or event with particular focus on source analysis. Lectures / seminars / office hours Examples: Aztecs – 1066 and All That – Making of Modern India Option modules – first and second semester. Detailed studies of periods / themes. Lectures / seminars / office hours Examples: Rome and Its Empire – The History of Terrorism – Gender, Culture & Society Course assignment – taught in second semester only. 5,000 word essay tied to either a document option or option module. Workshops and individual supervisions. Single Honours Degree Structure Compulsory Modules Must take at least two option modules from History HST202 (Semester 1) 20 credits Document Option Course Assignment (Semester 1) 20 credits (Semester 2) 20 credits Option Modules At least one module (including the document option) per band: Band A – Pre 1500 Band B – 1500-1800 Band C – Post 1800 Can take 20 credits outside History – unrestricted How? Attached to your Document Option or one of your Option modules. What? Provided the member of staff teaching is available in sem 2. 5,000 word extended essay. When? Runs in semester 2 only. Course Assignment Teaching? Restrictions Supervisor, seminars & workshops. Can only be taken with HST modules, not AAP or EAS. Preferences? Nominate top three preferences. 17/07/2016 © The University of Sheffield Dual Honours Degree Structure Compulsory Module HST202 (Semester 1) Option Modules? Must take at least one option module from History - total of 40 credits. No banding requirements for dual students. Generally 60 credits in History and 60 credits in dual. Can take 20 credits outside History – unrestricted. Timetable The timetable is draft at this stage, please be aware changes can occur. Please check your timetable carefully, particularly if you are taking modules outside of History. We work closely with our Dual Departments to ensure the minimum number of timetable problems.
