One-to-one Counselling
Although many personal difficulties can be
discussed with friends and family, sometimes it
is useful to talk to someone neutral who is outs
ide your day to day life. Hundreds of University
of Sheffield students use the objectivity we offer
to think through a whole variety of emotional,
personal and psychological concerns.
Consultation – concern for a friend
If you have concern for a friend, housemate or
student colleague you can call us on 0114 222 4134.
We can offer advice and guidance on dealing with
your query (or visit our website) www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid/counselling/service
Staff making a referral
Nearly all students self-refer but if you are a
member of staff concerned about the well-being of
a student please telephone us for information and
guidance. It may also be possible for you to speak
briefly with a Duty Counsellor.
All of our clinical staff are experienced and qualified
and work within the ethical frameworks for good
practice of their relevant professional organisations.
Making an appointment
Register with the Service by completing our
online registration form. This can be done
remotely or in person at 36 Wilkinson Street
www.shef.ac.uk/ssid/counselling/online-registration.
This will take less than one minute to complete.
If you have mobility or sensory access
requirements do let us know so that we can
provide an appropriate service for you.

Triage appointment
Access to the service can involve attending one of
our triage sessions. These appointments last
between 20-30minutes. The aim of these sessions is
to give you opportunity to talk briefly about your
situation and for us to assess that you are in the
right place. This may be sufficient in itself. However,
if you need further support we can identify what is
available within the Service, University or externally.
tcomes and ongoing sessions
Outcomes and ongoing sessions
If it is agreed that counselling will be helpful we
will discuss a viable schedule. The number of
sessions we offer to students will vary
depending on presenting issue, service demands
and counsellor/student availability. At this poin
t you may be taken-on or, if another form of h
elpwould seem to be more appropriate, the
counsellor will discuss other options and point
you in the right direction. Please note that our
new Service Level Agreement aims to ensure
that all students are assessed as quickly as
possible. However, when our service exceeds
capacity we may temporarily decline new
registrations. In the rare event that this does
occur, we will be transparent and up front with
you about the situation.
Confidentiality
The Data Protection Act 1998 requires us to
obtain your consent for this record keeping. Our
team will not pass on personal information
without a client’s express permission, except in
the following circumstances; where the counsello
rbelieves the client or a third party is in serious
danger—or—where the counsellor would be
liable to civil or criminal court procedure if the
information were not disclosed. In these
circumstances the counsellor will normally
encourage the client to pass on information to
the relevant person/agency themselves.
