The Phoenix Project: Surviving Cancer - Art Exhibition
The Phoenix Project is a unique collaboration between cancer survivors, graphic artists and
researchers attempting to capture the reality of living with cancer. The research was undertaken by Dr.
Andy Chantry (Medicine), Dr. Matthew Cheeseman (English), Dr. Natalie Hammond (Sociology,
University of Manchester) and Dr. Alex Peng (Information School). Ethical approval was granted (REC
reference 13/YH/0023; IRAS project ID 121854) for researchers to interview cancer survivors and ask
them about the impact of cancer on intimate areas of their life including their sex lives and
relationships. Transcripts of these interviews were given to a group of artists recruited from the Graphic
Medicine community and a series of powerful, provocative, heart wrenching, funny and moving images
were created. With permission, these will be displayed to raise awareness, to salute and to celebrate
the bravery, honesty and forbearance of those who go through the hardest of times with such incredible
dignity and fortitude.
This event is free, but we do ask you to register your intention to attend using the link below (this is
