BCOE Diversity Implementation Team

Members present: Denise Collins, Ken Coleman, Marilyn Leinenbach, Marlene Lu, Elonda Ervin, Karen
Buchholz, Larry Tinnerman, JaDora Sailes, Sydney McClary
NCATE report received. Standard 4 mentioned progress but we need to keep moving forward with the
plan of action developed at the summer retreat.
3. Enhancing and Maintaining Diversity in Employment of Faculty, Staff, and Administration:
o 3.1 working through search committees as recommended by ISU Council on Diversity
o 3.2 retention: mentoring a few faculty – Denise is working with 2.
 Consider pulling 3 year and under faculty together for group mentoring
 High volume of participation at new faculty orientation but dies out quickly
 Need regular meetings with junior faculty
 Need for exit interviews on why leaving that are college/department specific
o P3.2.2 Affirmative Action is spearheading recruitment information guidelines
 Bonita & Elonda working on workshops for search committees with representatives of DIT
to be included
 Elonda is working with staff/administration; Bonita on faculty
o There is verbage to be added to job descriptions which will focus on diversity aspects
2. Recruiting, Supporting, Retaining and Graduation a Diverse Student Body
o 2.1 Ken and Ingrid announced a focus group – only 2 students participated
 To shift to a questionnaire – work in progress
 Larry held roundtable discussion at 200 level. We need to be clear on what we are looking
for before application
 A priority ** - work together with Admissions for looking at students wanting Education as
major
 Need better follow through – enhance Teachers of Tomorrow
o 2.2 Research by JaDora and Lilia done
o 2.2 b Climate Study needed
 ISU Council searching for one to use across all levels. President’s office is willing to cover
expense. Currently targeting spring distribution
o 2.3 Diversity Module participation was requested by Dean prior to NCATE. 85 in BCOE completed
module. Special Ed 100% participation. Will continue to push participation and in spring a new
module will be put in place of Office of Diversity
o 2.4 Education luncheons held at Rhoads Hall. Included 2 faculty and 20 students but only 4 were
education majors
o 2.4 b. Sydney, Ingrid, Karen to work on ideas for funding Habitat House and making it collegewide. Stress toys shaped like tools as option – sell to raise funds
o 2.5 Sydney to work on social media aspects to get the word on diversity out.

 Need an audit of social media and not focus totally on multicultural.
 Student organizations are not as responsive
 Need best practices guidelines for students orgs; discussions with president and advisors
2.6 Praxis tutorial integrates in ELED 200
 To remain thru July 1 – screen and test not completed for replacement
 Question raised on Time frames – need to continue to push students to take this year
 Larry will have 4 workshops in residence hall
1. Creating a Diverse and Inclusive Environment
Sydney will make trip to Purdue to meet with the COE Diversity Officer.
o 1.4 Completed with CIMT – no changes made
 To revisit and look at P&T Diversity Efforts - any changes need to be reported to Denise
o 1.3 a – November 2 – promote to all staff & faculty
o 1.3 b – Steve Wessler will be working with VCSC Middle schools on bullying. Meeting November
9 in Whitaker to give focus group results
o 1.3 c – Looking for speaker for 2013 Educator Day who can address diversity. Dean working
with VC Education Foundation
