Year-End Status and Accomplishments
During clinical experiences, students in the second
year of the ADN program enhance their delegation
skills by providing direction to students in the first
year. In the 3rd semester of the VN program, the
leadership experience enhances students’ abilities to
manage a team of CNAs in long-term care facilities.
Both programs utilize clinical competencies in each
semester which students must pass to graduate.
In both programs faculty use clinical case studies in
group discussions in the classroom. This theory in
transferred into clinical practice on a weekly basis.
The ADN program has twelve full time faculty for
the main campus program. For the extended
campus, in collaboration with Sutter Health, there
are 15 adjunct faculty at present. There are two
adjunct faculty provided by Kaiser Permanente for
the part-time program. A new action item will be to
explore avenues to enhance the integration of
adjunct faculty.
The VN program, at present, has four full time
faculty.
In each program, faculty meet a minimum of once a
month specifically to address curriculum issues.
Students are invited to these meetings, and they
provide input for potential changes or additions to
the curriculum.
Objectives for these topics have been enhanced.
Both Boards of nursing require this content for
licensure. In the VN program, two faculty
completed ELNEC training (End of Life Nursing
Education Consortium). One VN faculty member
has Pain Resource Nurse Training.

N305 has been increased to one unit. The course
has enhanced students’ success in the nursing
programs. It is not a required course.
Utilize an increased variety of teaching methods, such
as multimedia, interactive, case studies, concept
mapping, and group projects.

Year-End Status and Accomplishments
The ADN program met and exceeded all standards
following an accreditation visit in April, 2001 by
the Board of Registered Nursing. The next visit will
be in Spring 2006.
The Vocational Nursing Program has received
continuing accreditation until 2008. A formal selfstudy was submitted to the BVNPT in Fall 2003.
Due to the completeness of the self-study and the
demonstration of meeting all of the regulations,
there will not be an actual visit to the program.
Three ADN faculty members attended a day long
workshop in Spring 2004 that focused on
developing critical thinking test questions. Exams
are updated continually.
The LRCCD Nursing Advisory Committee meets
twice a year. As a result of suggestions from the
committee, the curriculum is current.

Investigate creative ways to make an impact on the
critical nursing shortage.

ADN nursing students the opportunity to obtain a

nursing programs.

Year-End Status and Accomplishments
A two-year grant from the California Community
Chancellor’s Office provided money to increase the
number of ADN nursing students. Ten Career
Mobility (LVN-to-RN) students graduated in spring
2003; eight more students graduated Spring 2004.
A partnership with Sutter Health which allowed the
opportunity to add an extended campus to the ADN
program has increased the number of entering
students by 55 per semester.
Another grant from the CA Community College
Chancellor’s office, which began July 1, 2004, is
providing funding to a part time program which
began on June 7, 2004.
Eight students were admitted in this track in the
Spring 2002 semester. Five students graduated on
May 2004. Another cohort of 10 students will begin
in January 2006.
Goal 2: Promote student success and reduce attrition
Provide theory/clinical tutor to help students who need DSS; DTL
concentrated focus on theory and/or clinical skills
2a
In the ADN program, student tutors have been used
with minimal success. It has been difficult to find
peer tutors who have the time to tutor others.
Faculty do tutoring for their specific subjects as the
need arises.
In the VN program, the faculty rotate tutoring
sessions each week. This has been quite successful.

Year-End Status and Accomplishments
Computer programs have been purchased for
both programs and have been used by the
students. It is too early to determine if these
programs have enhanced success on the National
Examinations.
Faculty have open door policies during their
office hours and many times beyond office hours.
Peer tutoring has been discontinued; it has not
proven to be consistent and successful.
Faculty have continued to encourage ESL
students to access resources offered on campus.
Few have accessed the opportunities; primarily,
the students say they do not have time.
Faculty continue to encourage students to take
the Pharmacology and Dosage Calculation
classes.
Goal 3: NCLEX Scores will be above 95%
Faculty have reviewed exams and have refined
the questions to assure continuity with the
objectives.
The subscription to NCLEX Reports has offered
an opportunity to review strengths of the
program as well as areas that can be strengthed.

The summer LVN-to-RN summer course has
increased to 20. Those who complete
successfully will enter either the Sacramento City
College ADNprogram or the American River
ADN Program.
Another group of Collaborative students will be
enrolled in January 2006.
There are over 260 applicants to the ADN
program each semester. We can only admit 30 at
the main campus. For the extended campus there
have been between 260-290 applications. At this
time there is no need to recruit more potential
nursing students.

Develop the nursing courses Online for the
ADN program as either hybrid or totally
online.
Purchase updated software for clinical
simulations
Decrease enrollment in the VN program to
every Fall semester instead of each semester
Offer the LVN IV Therapy and Blood
Withdrawal course each spring semester. May
also incorporate requirements for RNs which
will increase the number of students.
Continue the part-time RN track in
collaboration with Kaiser Permanente. Plan to
enter a new class every 3 or 4 semesters
Continue the extended campus RN track in
collaboration with Sutter Health
Remodel Room 36 as a clinical lab for nursing
students
Create and implement computerized testing in
the RN program.
Explore avenues to better enhance the
integration of all adjunct faculty with the main
campus faculty.

Justification
The Board of Registered Nursing and the Board of Vocational Nursing and
Psychiatric Technicians each require a Director to be in charge of the
programs. The current Director is retiring June 30, 2006.
Nursing students must practice invasive clinical skills prior to applying those
skills to patients in the hospital. The amount requested will be for both
nursing programs.
Remodeling M36 to convert to a clinical lab for nursing students will provide
an opportunity for M33-M35 to be better utilized as a classroom with
different configurations.
