#

1a Co-sponsor CAC programs with academic units

1b

1c

Invite faculty to present on special interest topics.

Goal 1: To increase faculty and staff participation in CAC programming.

Action Item

Linkage to other Plans

Year-end status and accomplishments

Include faculty participation in open forums.

Collaborated with International Studies, Music,

Literature, Theater, Women Studies, CalWORKs, and

Staff Resources on several programs throughout the year.

Co-sponsored with Staff Resources a film series that included faculty and staff facilitating discussions on films that they believed to be of values in intercultural education.

Faculty gave presentations and served on panels sharing their expertise and opinions in open forums that covered everything from politics, to the war on terrorism, how to handle the stress of 9/11, also to how to care for and talk to children.

2a

Goal 2: To increase student participation in CAC programs.

Invite students to recommend cultural programs to increase diversity in programs.

Students completed surveys with program recommendations and suggestions. Students participated

2b Encourage student clubs to submit proposals for programs that reflect diversity. in focus groups sharing their interest in growth of the

CAC and future programs.

The following clubs submitted requests for programs and activities: Muslims, African Scholars, NOW,

MECHA, Polynesian Connection and the Indigenous

Pride Club.

As a result of the clubs participation, programs were more reflective of the diversity on campus.

Goal 3: To address relocation needs and invite group into the CAC for events.

Action Item

Linkage to other Plans

Year-end status and accomplishments

3a Set up the CAC to be welcoming user friendly.

Invite campus community to celebrate the relocation of the CAC.

CAC was relocated to the Student Center, East Hall. In this new location the visibility of the Center has increased 100%, it is more accessible to the campus community. Students find it a comfortable place to visit. The displays in the CAC change to reflect the diversity on campus. Publications are available for students to browse that reflect the diversity of students on campus.

The dedication for the CAC has been approved and will take place Fall 2002.

4a

Goal 4: To support under-represented students success.

Support students through mentoring, coaching and programming.

Student workers are coached in event planning and learn to work with diverse groups of people. Individual students stop by throughout the week for support and encouragement as they struggle to remain in college, often working full-time jobs.

Other Accomplishments:

The Cultural Awareness Center staff and the Student Leadership and Development staff developed a system of scheduling use of the CAC by other units on campus. In the past, the CAC clerk managed this responsibility throughout the year; however, this year it was given to Student Leadership and Development which was a major change that came with the relocation. Time was allocated for CAC events between 10 and 2. Minor problems occurred but staff should be applauded for their commitment to making this a win/win solution to scheduling areas of the student center.

Based on samples:

1.

Students of color attend events at a greater number and on a more regular basis than white students.

2.

White students are more likely to participate when required by the instructor.

3.

The high number of survey respondents of Asian/Pacific Islander decent may be the result of the participation of ethnic identification during this period.
