ACTIVITIES FOR THE PRE- AND COREQUISITES AND ADVISORIES
COMPONET: (After each activity, where appropriate, indicate the #(s) of the legislative or regulatory authority satisfied)
1.
Ensure open enrollment access to courses and programs limited only by health, safety,
facilities limitations, and carefully established and scrutinized prerequisites and
corequisistes according to adopted Model District Policy. (Component Standard #1)
2
Establish requisites and advisories through the Curriculum Committee, following content
review and data collection, and sound research procedures required for each type of
pre- or co-requisite according to the provision in the adopted Model District Policy.
(Component Standards #2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
3.
Use sound data-gathering practices to establish communication or computation
prerequisites that demonstrate a rational measure of a student’s readiness to enter the
course or program. Use detailed course objectives on records and match the body of
knowledge deemed necessary in the course with the student outcomes from the requisite
course. (Component Standards #4, 5, 6)
4.
Requisites for existing classes are reviewed each six years through the program review
process within each academic department. Each course is reviewed, as well as requisites
according to the provisions of the adopted Model District Policy. (Component Standard
#7)
5.
All degree credit courses and pre-collegiate basic skills courses are taught by qualified
instructors, according to the outline of records. The program review process closely
examines the consistency and adherence to course outline of record for those aspects of a
course that are the basis for a requisite skill. (Component Standard #8)
6.
Until automatic prerequisite checking is in place, permit students to enroll in courses
pending verification of meeting prerequisites. Efficiently verify prerequisites through the
Counseling Prerequisite Verification Form, or through the lists of students who meet
prerequisites provided to the academic departments, or by presenting transcript or
assessment records in class. Promptly refund fees to students who are involuntarily
dropped. (Component Standard #9)
7.
Students may challenge any requisite by initiating the challenge process established
according to the procedures of the adopted Model District Policy. The student indicates
on a challenge form the justification for meeting the level of preparation of the
recommended requisite. The student may still attend the course, while representative
faculty, other than the instructor for that course, and the division dean from the academic
department determine within one week of receipt of the form whether the student meets
the necessary level or preparation. (Component Standard #10, 11)

District: Los Rios Community College

ACTIVITIES FOR THE PRE- AND COREQUISITES AND ADVISORIES
COMPONET: (continued):
8.
The required requisites and challenge process are publicized in the College Catalog, the
Class Schedule, the Student Guide, and on the college website. The challenge forms are
in the counseling office and in the division offices. (Component Standard #12)
9.
Each semester review curriculum offerings, course sections, and enrollment to ensure that
there are sufficient sections of courses offered to reasonably accommodate all students
who are required to take the requisite or using the challenge process, waive the requisite
requirement for any student for whom space was not available. Ensure that enough precollegiate courses designed to teach prerequisite skills are offered in sufficient number
and frequency. (Component Standard #13)
College: Sacramento City College

8.2
GOALS FOR THE PRE- AND CO-REQUISITIES AND ADVISORIES
COMPONENT:
1.
The Curriculum Committee will review course outlines to determine if student likelihood
of success should be improved by establishing pre- or corequisites. Prerequisites,
corequisites and advisories will continue to be established as necessary and appropriate,
but with caution and a proper level of scrutiny.
2.
College catalogs and schedules will continue to clearly identify pre- and corequisites and
the method of their challenge. They will also continue to define and list all advisories and
explain how a student may choose to take a course despite not having met an advisory for
it.
3.
Challenged procedures will be resolved in a timely manner, and if upheld, the student will
be permitted to enroll in that course or program.
4
The process for reviewing pre- and corequisites at least once every six years will be
maintained, including sound data-collection research practices when called for.
5.
The college will maintain open enrollment to the greatest extent possible within
limitations imposed by health, safety space availability, and reasonable and necessary
requisites or advisories.
6.
Continue to develop process to ensure consistent and complete enforcement of all course
pre-requisites using an automated system.
