These include appointing the internal examiner to chair the viva. When discussing a possible external examiner appointment you should ensure that the external examiner is made aware of this variation. External examiner eligibility. In addition to the criteria set out in the university’s regulations for the appointment of external examiners you should also consider such factors as: ● ● their recent experience of PhD examining. any relationship that may exist between the proposed external examiner and members of the supervisory team and/or the PhD candidate. As a general rule it would be inappropriate to appoint an external examiner that one is too personally and professionally close to. It is acceptable to appointment someone that you know but likely to be unacceptable to appoint someone that you have published with. If you have any queries on this matter please consult with the relevant PGR Director. Please also note that the internal examiner only, and no member of the student's supervisory team, should liaise with the external examiner before the viva voce examination is conducted.
