Discussion Items Developing 1440 degrees in your division (Rich) I have been working with several people on campus who been asking questions about what’s involved in the SB 1440 degrees. We have two approved degrees (Sociology and Communication Studies) and have a third one (Administration of Justice) that is in the pipeline. It’s early in the process and we modeled ours after one that has already been approved by the Chancellor’s Office. That one was not required to submit some of the materials that we are now being asked to submit. Updating courses in your division (Rich) Reminder to look at your course outlines and update. If you are going through your Unit Plan process this is a good time to update them. Prerequisites (Process and Sunset) (Rich) I did meet earlier with Deb Moore. She is very interested in us taking advantage of the new option of being able to use the Content Review process in place of the statistical review process for prerequisites, and we are going to involve Kay in that discussion. It will involve a change in Board Policy before we can do that. So our goal is to try and get the process through Academic Senate proposing a change and having the board address that change so that starting next year we might be able to move in that direction. Changes in repeatability (Rich) The State Academic Senate met last week and looked at those proposals that I shared with you at the last meeting. All of those proposals were approved. There were some amendments to some of them, but essentially it is what I shared with you last time. That is what the Academic Senate is recommending to the Chancellor’s Office. Repeatability will change and probably follow these recommendations. That the process seems like it will take place over next semester, way too late for any of us to change our catalogs. The discussion I am hearing is that the real effective date for when the Chancellor’s Office will hold us responsible for the change will be FALL 2013. That’s just discussion at this point. As I talk to people now I am trying to say that repeatability as it is exists now is likely to change or go away for many of our classes. Adaptive PE is not going to change. Performing Arts will have repeatability, but will have some changes. Athletics will be okay. PE repeatability will probably go away. CTE repeatability will go away. If faculty feel that the repeat experience is important for students in the program what needs to take place is for faculty to rewrite of the curriculum so that you have multiple classes to provide the repeat experience. Most likely what we are going to see is level type classes (Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced) or (A, B, C, D) where the courses are similar but show progressive skill building in the objectives and the outcomes. Some people are saying that need the repeated experience, and we can have that. We just need to do a little more paperwork for it. It’s going to keep us busy next year. One question that keeps coming up in the repeatability process that I am trying to get a definite answer on is, “What about Occupational Work Experience courses and Directed Studies? Will they be affected by the repeatability?” First of all the rules have not been changed yet! There have only been proposals for the changes, but most everybody seems to think that Title 5 treats those courses a little differently because there are some built in limits with those already. They are probably are going to be left unchanged, but one person said there might be some changes for Directed Studies. If people have questions I can put them out there and find answers. TBA (Marilyn) TBA course attendance documentation is required. And it has to show date, time, and number of hours. Students will have to sign in physically or be clocked in electronically. If the course has 1 hr TBA per week, we have to have a record of that students signing in date, time and that they did their one hour per week for the 18 weeks of the semester. Attendance records have to be kept on file with the grading and all the other course back-up materials. The student also has to be told where TBA is being held - either in the library, in a classroom, or in a lab. It has to have a physical location, so you just can’t say TBA and it’s in cyberspace. It actually has to have a location and then of course with TBA here has to be supervised by a faculty member who meets minimum qualifications. We just had a webinar this morning on this particular issue from the Chancellor’s Office and the topic of foreign language came up. If you had a TBA lab and you have people studying all different kinds of foreign language do you have to have a teacher of record of that particular language? Unfortunately, the answer is yes unless you turn it into a hybrid class. But you can’t send your French student to a lab that only has a German-speaking instructor. Now if you don’t want to get credit for it or if you don’t want apportionment, then that is fine. The message you really need to take back to your departments and divisions is we would like to do away with TBA if at all possible. There are going to be a few disciplines that keep it, such as NRSG. Take a look at those classes and see if you can turn it into something else, because the accountability of it is just getting to be a nightmare and the auditors are auditing right now on all past TBAs and we may have to return some money because we don’t have the documentation on attendance.
