Tyler’s Program is COMPETITIVE and
SELECTIVE.
Important Points to consider when
applying:
• There are always more qualified applicants than
allocated spots.
• Applicants are ranked by pre-admission testing
scores.
• You must have at least an overall GPA of 2.0 to
be eligible.
• You must have a curricular GPA of 2.5 to be
accepted.
• All attempts for the 5 first semester courses
within 5 years are counted when the curricular
GPA is calculated.
• College service area residents are given
priority.
Other Considerations When Applying.
Students who reside in the college service area have first
priority when ranked for admission. Our service area
includes:
Amelia County
Dinwiddie County
City of Hopewell
Prince George County
Charles City Count
Surry County
Chesterfield County
Sussex County
City of Colonial Heights City of Petersburg
Additionally, any applicant residing in locations in which
our students attend clinical is also considered to have first
priority:
Powhatan
Henrico
Hanover
Richmond
Students who reside outside of these areas or are not permanent residents of the
United States will fall in the second tier of ranking. For more information,

Our clinical agencies require all students to possess a
social security card for security clearance.
STEP 1: Apply to the College.
Apply to JTCC online or in-person at
Admissions and Records Offices on either
campus.

STEP 2: See a Counseling Center Staff.
• Submit official copies of your high school or
GED transcripts.
• Submit official copies of all college
transcripts.
• If new to the college, complete placement
testing.
• Meet with Counseling Center staff to declare a
major. You will be assigned an academic
advisor.
• Counseling Center staff will advise you
regarding baseline academic testing and assist
you in choosing your courses to get started.
• Complete a Transcript Evaluation Request if
applicable.
STEP 3: Contact Your Academic Advisor
Academic advisors are assigned by the
Counseling Center and posted on your
myTyler account. You should contact
them by e-mail if you have further
questions.
• Use your VCCS e-mail address when e-mailing,
and include your full name and student ID
number (emplid number)
• If you have declared a major in another
subject and do not have a nursing advisor,
you may contact the program director. Call
the nursing department at 622-8715 for more
information.
STEP 4: Complete 1st Semester Courses.
Successful completion of the following classes are
required to start the program:
ENG 111
SDV 100 or SDV 101
PSY 230
MTH 158
BIO 141
You may be currently enrolled in these courses at
the time of application.
You no longer need high school chemistry and
biology to apply.
STEP 5: Take the TEAS.
Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)
scores are used to determine ranking. The
following minimum scores are required:
45 Percentile Rank National Score Overall
45 Percentile Rank National Sub-Scores in
Reading, Math, Science and Language

Two Tracks Available for Students.
TRADITIONAL TRACK
Most courses are seated.
Clinical may occur during the day, evening, weekend.
The Tyler program is rigorous and requires tremendous time
commitment .
Computer literacy is imperative.
HYBRID TRACK
All lecture is delivered virtually.
Clinical may occur during the day, evening, weekend.

Prior success in online learning is required.
Students must be independent, organized learners.

Plan for the time commitment of the program.
Students are encouraged not to work more than 20 hours per
week.
Plan to study 3 hours per credit per week (24-30
hours/week).
