Course Description and Objective
This is the first course in the two-semester introduction to accounting. In this course, students
are introduced to the concepts of financial accounting. Students are taken through the
accounting cycle that illustrates how business transactions are recorded and how this information
is assembled to create financial statements. Emphasis is on how to use these statements to
measure the financial performance of business enterprises. A more in depth coverage of the
proper valuation and presentation of Balance Sheet accounts completes the course. At the
conclusion of this course you will be expected to:
1. be able to interpret financial statements and derive information to support decisionmaking;
2. have an understanding of financial accounting concepts and the way these concepts are
applied in preparing financial statements; and
3. be able to prepare financial statements.
Course Format
You should come to class having already read the assigned chapters and attempted the suggested
exercises and problems. The lectures will be a combination of instruction, discussion, and
problem solving.
2
In addition to lectures, you have scheduled labs. These labs will focus on the exercises and
problems assigned. Friday labs will be kept free for you to work on your group project.
WebCT will be used to make course material available such as the course outline, tentative
schedule, power point slides, solutions to the questions at the end of each chapter.
Examinations
There will be two exams during the term, each covering essentially four chapters of the text.
Because the material in later chapters builds on information presented in earlier chapters, there is
a cumulative component although the emphasis will be on the four chapters most recently
covered. The final exam will focus on the final four chapters but will have that same cumulative
component.
Make-Up Exam Policy
You will receive a mark of zero on exams missed. Students who miss an exam for medical
reasons will be allowed to have the weight of the missed exam applied to the final exam if
suitable documentation from a medical doctor is submitted. There are no make-up exams! You
are welcome to use the missed exam for practice and I will be happy to go over it with you.
Individual Assignments and Quizzes
Problems and exercises are outlined in the schedule. I strongly recommend that you attempt as
many of these problems and exercises you feel necessary. We will have several quizzes; four of
which will count as 10% of your mark. These quizzes will be collected at the start of the lab
period. Unfortunately with accounting…practice makes perfect!
Group Term Project
Groups of 4 to 5 individuals each will be formed early on in the course. You will be expected to
work withy your group on the term project. We can learn a lot from our peers so try to take full
advantage of the group work. We will break into our groups several times during the term for
discussion purposes. Your group will also be responsible for a written project and presentation.
Details for the group project will be posted and distributed.
