Highlights of 2015
Introduction
Client Services ------------------------------------------------------------
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
In FY15, the Center provided 1,015 service transactions for
people with disabilities. The number of different clients served totaled
238. We were able to place 52 new systems with clients and 81 new
clients were added to the list of people we have served. The number of
system modifications, equipment repairs, equipment loans, services
provided and client evaluations totaled 963. Since 1981, we have
provided services to 3,606 clients in 39 different states and eight
countries.
Special Events -----------------------------------------------------------SHARE held its 30th annual walkathon in September at Fort
Taber in New Bedford, MA. This year’s event was sponsored by
Mechanics Cooperative Bank, the Carney Family Charitable Foundation,
Bay Coast Bank and Colonial Air. Participants enjoyed touring the Fort.
Walkers and workers were offered their choice of SHARE tee shirts,
coffee mugs or caps. The event raised over $23,000. The Ben
Boyle/Ron Kostyla Golf Classic this past summer drew 80 golfers and
brought in about $9,300. This year, the Classic Car Show and Flea
market attracted 35 vendors, 200 classic cars and more than 800 visitors.
Proceeds exceeded $5,300. SHARE is grateful to all the volunteers who
worked so hard to make these events so enjoyable and beneficial to our
clients. SHARE would like to partner with similar minded organizations
in raising funds.
Foundation/Endowment Support------------------------------------At the conclusion of the fiscal year, SHARE learned that it will
be the recipient of a number of grants including $5,000 from the Rodgers
Family Foundation, $12,500 from the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Foundation,
$1,000 from the Fall River Commission on Disabilities and $1,000 from
the Ayres Foundation.
SHARE continues to experience financial challenges and
continues to pursue both old and new sources of funding. Going
forward, we will continue to explore ways of conducting business as
efficiently and economically as possible.
Center for Rehabilitation Engineering is one of many centers of
the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The day-to-day operation of
the Center is under the direction of the Director of the Center for
Rehabilitation Engineering who reports administratively to the Dean of
the College of Engineering. The Chancellor of UMass Dartmouth
appoints the Director upon recommendation of the Board of Directors of
the Center. The Center derives its financial support primarily through
contracts for services and through the SHARE Foundation. The primary
purpose of the Center is to provide direct support in the form of
equipment and services to individuals with disabilities, particularly those
who are physically unable to communicate independently. A second
purpose is to involve UMass Dartmouth faculty and students in applied
research and development of procedures and products intended to
improve the quality of life of children and adults with disabilities. The
Center, established by an act of the University Board of Trustees in 1987,
maintains a research and development lab in the engineering building.
The Center’s administrative offices and client evaluation/training facility
are located in Modular Building 3 on the UMass Dartmouth campus.
The Society for Human Advancement through Rehabilitation
Engineering (SHARE) Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit
Massachusetts corporation with headquarters at 14 Autumn Court, North
Dartmouth, Massachusetts. It was incorporated in 1982 by Professors
Lester W. Cory, Philip H. Viall and Richard Walder for the primary
purpose of ensuring access to appropriate technology for children and
adults with severe disabilities, particularly those who are physically
unable to independently communicate. An elected, 12-person Board of
Directors whose members serve three-year, renewable terms governs the
SHARE Foundation. SHARE is the primary financial supporting agency
of the UMass Dartmouth Center for Rehabilitation Engineering and
devotes essentially all of its income to the support of the Center’s
activities.
SHARE is categorized by the IRS as a 501 (c) (3) Public
Charity. Donations to Public Charities can be tax deductible up to 50%
of a donor’s income.
