Katz, P. Vanston, C. Knowlton, C. Bekes, B. Kocher, J. Kirby, J. Carpenter, M. Goldberg, S. Mandayam, R. Harvey, J. McGeehan, J. Mitchell-Williams, C. Hasit , V. Weil Summary: Focus on the research Strategic Plan, see below time-line Potential areas for focus at CMSRU: Centers of Excellence: 1. The science of healthcare delivery 2. Medical Education (for Health Care Professionals, students, etc.) 3. Critical Care/Intensive Care 4. Cardiovascular medicine 5. Diabetes management 6. Biomedical Engineering Innovative Research Methods: 7. Systems engineering 8. Computational Intelligence, Bioinformatics & Diagnostic Data Mining 9. Financial/cost effectiveness research 10. Mechanisms (MOA) and bio-markers 11. Information translation/delivery Upon completing an overall assessment of the areas of intended research focus, we began to work on the goals necessary for insuring that the medical school established a solid framework from which to provide research education to our medical students as well as to prepare for current and developing research. We used the following format to organize the planning process. Moving Forward: Goals Objectives Actions Needed Responsible Parties Necessary Resources Timelines Benchmarks Assessment of Goal The original four key goals were reviewed and received minor editing: 1. Students will engage in meaningful projects that generate knowledge. 2. Research faculty will develop rewarding, sustainable and productive research careers. 3. Faculty will be prepared to adapt and create a supportive environment suitable to mentoring medical students in scholarly projects based on skill sets. 4. CMSRU will support a research environment that produces high quality studies that can obtain competitive funding. The next step in the planning process is to establish the following for each goal: - Objectives to reach the goal; - Actions necessary to accomplish each objective; - Responsible parties; - Resources required; - Timelines and benchmarks - Assessing/determine if we're meeting our goals. Agreed on the following objectives for our first two goals; some have specific actions listed as they were a natural extension of the conversation. We will refine these as the process moves forward. 1. Goal: Students will engage in meaningful projects that generate knowledge. Objectives: o Provide a directory of opportunities for student projects Consider team projects Determine experience necessary Consider a match (similar to Rowan engineering) o Develop a cadre of faculty mentors Identify interested faculty aligned with our overarching goals Insure commitment in process Provide standards for mentoring/training o Utilize a tracking mechanism to insure that all students are aligned with a project and that the project status is monitored Faculty advisors will review periodically Research mentors will track and discuss Student responsibility/reporting o Identify students interested in research as well as interest areas Conduct student survey early in MS1 o Set up an advisory committee for each student project consisting of at least two members within outside of the mentors department 2. Goal: Research faculty will develop rewarding, sustainable and productive research careers. Objectives: o Faculty will be provided administrative support in order to successfully compete for funding from external agencies. Management grants Identification of foundation support o Provide Incentive Insure that research faculty time spent training medical students has positive impact on academic status For recognition/ to excel in areas of expertise o Mentoring for faculty o Foster interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues within and outside of RU o Education/faculty development o Establish seed funding 3. Faculty will be prepared to adapt and create a supportive environment suitable to mentoring medical students in scholarly projects based on faculty skill sets. o o o 4. Create a culture where a student centered approach to medical education is valued Hold a pre-meeting of faculty interested in mentoring medical students in various projects to outline expectations, etc. Ensure faculty are aware of constraints on students (workload) Identify specific funding opportunities that could support educational development of mentors Faculty recognized for successfully creating valued research opportunities for students. CMSRU will support a research environment that produces high quality studies that can obtain competitive funding. o o o o Provide faculty with modern, well-equipped research space to perform their research with appropriate core facilities and administrative infrastructures Grant applications Grant financial management Adequate library, statistical, software available, laboratory services Adequate laboratory space available commensurate with need and funding Bring in experts to provide guidance on competitive grant writing and seeking funding Establish seminar/grand rounds series Strategic Divisions & Subcommittee work • Research • Education/Students • Community • Finances • Development • Organizational growth/Opportunities Research Strategic Planning Committee Members: Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers Jeff Brenner and Ken Gross Cooper University Hospital Mike DiSanto, Joe Parrillo, Steve Trzeciak, and Larry Weisberg Coriell Institute for Medical Research Michael Christman and Joe Mintzer Rutgers Camden Andrey Grogoriev and Joe Martin Rowan University Parviz Ansari, Greg Caputo, Steve Chin, Shreek Mandayam, Steve Phelan, and Robi Polikar University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Cathy Poon Led by: Patti Vanston and Harry Mazurek Guidance: by Paul Katz and Annette Reboli Four key goals: 1.
