University of Nevada Department of Geography Instructor Gary Johnson Geography 405/605 Data Dictionary (Pathfinder) – GPS Collection Lab This exercise is designed to help you get familiar with using a GPS unit, collecting data using a GPS unit and overlaying that data collected on DOQQs. You are a consulting firm and have been asked to collect data from a local sports complex to print on a Digital Ortho Quarter Quadrangle. The task is simple: 1. Create a data dictionary for point, line and area data. 2. Collect data points of the bases for each baseball diamond. 3. Collect data area of each field in the study area. 4. Collect data of the total study area. 5. Collect data from the study area to the MS building. 6. Differential Correct all data and Print out your results. 7. Collect the Digital Ortho Quarter Quadrangle for the KECK Library. a. Read the metadata on the DOQQs to find the projection and Datum. 8. Print a page-size map showing data collected and DOQQs. 9. Print your data dictionary Check out the GPS units from Pat for the day you are going to collect the data. The location of the study site is any Baseball complex in the Reno/Sparks area. (Be prepared to interact with baseball teams practicing. You may decide to check before you go out as to when teams are practicing.)
