February 7, 2011 PASSED VOICE VOTE 54-R-20 UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-EAU CLAIRE STUDENT SENATE RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF A STRONGER RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE UNIVERSITY SENATE AND THE STUDENT SENATE WHEREAS, 1 Wisconsin rights 2 governance 3 campuses in the UW System; and WHEREAS, 4 to Statute the Wisconsin 36.09(4) faculty and Statute grants academic 36.09(5) shared staff of grants the shared 5 governance rights to the students of the campuses in the UW 6 System; and WHEREAS, the Student Senate Bylaws require the Student Body 7 8 President to attend all University Senate meetings; and WHEREAS, 9 the Student Director Finance Committee, the Academic Affairs Commission Director to attend 12 the 13 Information 14 University Senate Technology Committee; and Technology University the 11 Academic the require Commission Senate attend Bylaws 10 University to Senate Policies Commission Senate Committee Director to Budget and the attend the 15 WHEREAS, the Student Senate Bylaws Section 7.03.2 extends 16 to the University Senate Chair speaking and motioning rights as 17 long 18 Student Body President; and 19 20 21 22 as the University Senate extends those rights to the WHEREAS, the Student Body President has frequently reported to the University Senate; and WHEREAS, the University Senate Chair has regularly attended all Student Senate meetings this session; and 23 WHEREAS, the Student Senate has found this relationship to 24 be beneficial and desires further connection between the two 25 groups; and 26 WHEREAS, the University Senate considers many items 27 affecting students and student life, including curricular and 28 campus wide policy changes; and 29 WHEREAS, the Student Senate considers policies that affect 30 the entire campus in addition to many funding streams that in 31 part or in whole fund academic programs and departments; and 32 WHEREAS, the campuses of UW-Platteville, UW-La Crosse, UW- 33 Parkside, and UW-Stout grant a formalized speaking right to a 34 student representative at their faculty governance meetings; 35 BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Student Senate encourages 36 the University Senate to formalize the relationship between the 37 government of the students and the government of the faculty and 38 academic staff; and BE 39 IT FURTHER RESOLVED that that the Student Senate 40 requests that the Student Body President, or their designee, be 41 given rights at the University Senate, but not the right to 42 motion or vote; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Student Senate would honor 43 44 the 45 presented to the Student Senate; and 46 recognition of the University Senate Chair in matters BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Student Senate requests the 47 formal 48 Academic Policies, and Technology Committees to the positions 49 currently in attendance; and 50 holding of positions on the aforementioned Budget, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Student Senate views the 51 University Senate 52 governance; and as a valued partner in institutional 53 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Student Senate is amenable 54 to recommendations on other means by which faculty, academic 55 staff, and student representatives can work together on campus 56 issues; and 57 BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that upon passage President Jambrek 58 transmit copies of this 59 Stankevich, 60 Chancellor; Dr. Beth Hellwig, Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs; 61 Dr. Brian Carlisle, Dean of Students; Dave Gessner, Assistant Chancellor; resolution Dr. Patricia to Dr. Kleine, Brian Levin- Provost/Vice 62 Chancellor, Budget and Finance; Dr. Susan 63 University Senate; and all University Senators.
