Appointment of a Public Orator – Malaysia
Senate Standing Order XI states that:
“The Public Orators shall be appointed by Senate after considering a report of a Committee.
One of the Public Orators shall be designated as the Senior Public Orator who shall have
responsibility for allocating the duties across the year. The Public Orators shall hold office for
three years.”
Current position:
Executive Board request that Senate approve the appointment of a Public Orator for the first
Honorary Degree Ceremony in Malaysia, which will take place on 28 June 2014.
Professor Tom Lennard is a senior member of the Clinical Academic Office and has a high
profile both within the University and within the health system in Newcastle. He has been
President of his speciality association at a national level and his international esteem and
profile is reflected in a broad range of the roles held in various professional societies. He is
well practised in public speaking, chairing and managing committees and would be well
placed to deliver the role of Public Orator.
Executive Board will give further consideration to the appointment of a Public Orator for the
future ceremonies in Malaysia and Singapore.
Recommendation:
Senate is asked to approve the nomination for the appointment of Professor Tom Lennard
as the Public Orator for the Honorary Degree Ceremony in Malaysia on 28 June 2014.
