Newcastle University Smoke Free Policy 1.0 Introduction This policy has been developed to aid compliance with the requirements of the Health Act, associated Smoke-Free Regulations and our commitment to provide a high-quality healthy working and learning environment for all. 2.0 Aims of the Policy Protect the right of the non-smoker not to be exposed to second hand tobacco smoke Surpass compliance with the legislation associated with no smoking Provide encouragement and support to smokers who wish to give up smoking Minimise the accumulation of unsightly smoking litter and reduce the risk of fire by providing suitable and adequate facilities 3.0 The Policy Newcastle University will ensure that: Smoking (including the use of electronic cigarettes) is not permitted in any University premises, or associated grounds other than in the specifically designated smoking areas Smoking is not permitted in any vehicle when it is being used for University business; this includes private vehicles when used by more than one person Smoking cessation support is sign posted to those wishing to stop smoking and that the University takes part in two stop smoking events annually Awareness of this Policy is promoted using signage and suitable interventions as necessary Normal disciplinary protocols are used should persons choose to disregard the requirements placed on them by this Policy Reasonable support is provided to partner organisations An annual action plan is developed to support the aims of this Policy The Policy is reviewed on a biannual basis Melissa Suddes June 2015
