McGaffey. The machine was lightweight and compact, but was difficult to operate because of the need to turn a hand crank at the same time as pushing it across the floor. McGaffey obtained a patent for his device on June 8, 1869, and enlisted the help of The American Carpet Cleaning Co. of Boston to market it to the public. It was sold for $25, a high price in those days. It is hard to determine how successful the Whirlwind was, as most of them were sold in Chicago and Boston, and it is likely that many were lost in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Only two are known to have survived, one of which can be found in the Hoover Historical Center. McGaffey was but one of many 19th-century inventors in the United States and Europe who devised manual vacuum cleaners. The first patent for an electrically driven "carpet sweeper and dust gatherer" was granted to Corinne Dufour of Savannah, Georgia in December 1900 . 1- Where was the first manually-powered cleaner invented?............................................... 2- Why was it difficult to operate it?...................................................................................... 3- Complete the following sentence :- Many cleaners were lost in…………………… 4- From the passage - give the opposite of (low)………………… - another meaning for (difficult) …………….. 5- Choose the correct answer :McGaffey invented the ( TV radio vacuum cleaner ) 6-Put (T) for true statements and (F) for false ones : - The first cleaner was heavy ( ) P.T.O 2 6- Choose the suitable words from a, b, c or d : 1) Bill Gates …………………..the Microsoft company in 1975 . a) improve b) set up c) come from d) invent c) product d) fresh c) a millionaire d) air 2) They work in a very busy………………. a) factory b) patent 3) Alwaleed Bin Talal is ………… a) important b) a business 4) I …………………..a poem from English into Arabic a) usable b) salty c) unusable d) bad c) reading d) reader c) is cooking d) cooker c) sleeps d) sleeps c) playing d) played 7- Choose the suitable answer from a, b, c or d : 1) He always ………………English . a) read b) reads 2) She ……………………….now a) cook b) cooked 3) While I …………………………,he shouted a) was sleeping b) sleep 4) She ………………football last week a) play b) is played 8-Do as shown in brackets 1- I haven't got a computer because I haven't got money (use so ) …………………………………………………………………………. 2-She lives in a house. ………………………………………. 3- This is ( an a ( negative) the ) sun 4- I ( be ) born in1976 ……………………………… ( correct ) 5-The book is bored ………………………………… (Correct the mistake) 6- Can I try …………………..this shoes 7- Taller is Ahmad than (complete) me ( rearrange ) ……………………………………………………………………………… 8- I loved those stories .Have you got any new one? …………….
