1.0 Purpose Of Report
To request the Lead Member for Environment Services agrees to the acceptance of £131,940 from the Salford West Partnership Board towards
Phase 2 improvement works at Old Warke Dam and to the expenditure of
£47,140
from the above for ecological surveys/advice and a flood risk assessment.
2.0 Background
2.1) Old Warke Dam (OWD) is a locally important water feature which has
been silting up over a number of years. The dam is contained within
Worsley Woods, an LNR (Local Nature Reserve) and SBI (Site of
Biological Importance).
The areas of siltation formed within the dam have been colonised by
vegetation including wetland tree species. The newly colonised siltation
has been awarded priority status as Wet Woodland and Eutrophic
Standing Water.
2.2) The first phase of improvements to OWD has been completed and the
four upstream silt traps and one trash screen have all been installed and
are working.
2.3) The second phase of the works will look at the future sustainability of the
D:\726879151.doc
Dam and the wet woodland etc.
The main elements of the work are as follows:-
* Specialist ecological advice
* Ecological survey work to include – desktop study, phase 1 habitat
survey, National Vegetation Classification, badger, vole, bat, breeding
birds and terrestrial invertebrates surveys.
* Hydraulic assessment
* Design and feasibility work
2.4) OWD has recently been assimilated into the Bridgewater Canal Corridor
proposals, thus maximising visitor potential to the area, promoting
outdoor activity, and encouraging outdoor exercise and integration
between residents.
3.0 Funding
3.1) Funding to the value of
£131,940
from the Salford West SRF Action Plan
2008/09 ,(see Appendix 1)has been offered to deliver the second phase
of the works as highlighted in 2.3 above.
.
3.2) This report is requesting approval to spend £47,140 of the above on
Ecological Surveys/Advice and a Flood Risk Assessment.
3.3) Further approval to spend the remaining budget of £84,800 , will be
sought in the future.
4.0 Benefits
The information required from both the ecological surveys and the flood
risk assessment is essential to determine the pathway this project will
follow to make the improvements necessary at Old Warke Dam.
Additionally the information obtained from the ecological surveys will significantly improve the ecological data base held by the Salford
Rangers, enabling them to better interpret the site and deliver associated environmental education. rmb/24/9/08
