Discussion
Laboratory tests results provided indicate that the material
performs equally as the specified materials.
The material has been recommended by industry experts
Omission of the geogrid will enable the material to be laid in the
conventional manner reducing traffic disruption due to it being
laid in a shorter period of time.
Potential for shorter contract period hence reducing congestion.
Omission of the geogrid will also reduce weakening/damage from
future service trenches, over which the geogrid is not replaced.
Reduction in the contract cost.
The material has been used by other Local Authorities on major
roads.
Possible sustainable benefits due to reduction in materials used
and improved durability.

Discussion
‘Bardon Superflex’ is a new product that has a limited history of
its long term performance.
It has not been directly compared to a hot rolled asphalt
reinforcement system.
It is a proprietary product that does not yet have HAPAS
certification (Industry Standard) guaranteeing long-term
performance.
Salford has no experience of using this product.
3.7
From the above, it can be seen that although there are many “advantages” to the
alternative material there are also a number of “disadvantages” which increase the
level of risk associated with using the product. However, notwithstanding these
concerns it is believed that with the appropriate safeguards the potential risks can be
minimised and consequently the alternative material should be used.

The financial implications are as follows: Works
