Student Internship English, Communication Westfield News (newspaper) Description: Student assistant position to assist with any/all writing/publication positions/responsibilities with a local newspaper (see added materials). Organization: Westfield News, 62 School St, Westfield, MA Administrator: Jim McKeever, Director of Content, Westfield News Group Number of hours per week: Approximately 8+ hrs. /week (120-130 hours per semester, flexible), for a 3-credit internship (6-hour also available). Academic Department: Open to all departments Academic Credit: Upon approval by academic department/faculty member; three (3) credits per semester (wk. journal/report maintained). Responsibilities: Core Duties: Hands-on practice in refining writing skills with personal experienced writing coach. Behind-the-scenes experience in working in a newsroom. Opportunity to create a portfolio of work, including both writing and the results of the student’s work as it appears in the media. Work hours coordinated with the student’s class schedule. Assignments may be coordinated with classroom projects. (For example, some interns have used actual features or releases for their feature writing, news writing or public relations classes.) Opportunity to become familiar with area media outlets and their personnel, which may help with job networking. Qualifications: Student must be seeking relevant academic credit with an interest in working with professional staff in/with the Westfield News. Exceptional written/verbal communication and computer skills. Completed required relevant courses determined by the Communication Dep’t, self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced environment and meet daily deadlines.
