PROGRESS SUMMARY FOR THE SALFORD VIRTUAL COMMUNITY 20TH NOVEMBER 2000 COMMUNITY MEETING A meeting was held at the Angel, Healthy Initiative, Chapel Street on the 7 th November. The meeting was attended by representatives from City of Salford, SARP, CVS, the Angel and Little Hulton One Stop Shop. Unfortunately representatives from Broughton Resource Centre, SALI and the Valley Resource centre were unable to attend. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the tasks to be completed for the virtual community site and provide some feedback on the work that been undertaken to date. OVERALL TIMESCALE It is likely that the site will 'go live' in early Jan. A rough version of the site can be accessed currently on http://195.44.254.86/salfordVC/ but it needs tidying up e.g. with wards, group categories, description of the site, removal of made up groups names etc. Testing of the site should commence prior to christmas. The first stage of training will commence in mid January, however, between now and then it is intended to develop a training manual. TRAINING ARRANGEMENTS Training covering web site design for an initially representatives from Community Groups and ICT access centres will take place early in the new year. Between now and then Mike Benjamin and James Holmes will draft a training manual covering the main areas - from planning what to put on a site through to development of the site using the zy tools. This should help in the training of further community and voluntary groups once the site goes 'live'. An initial list of the areas it is intended to cover is attached. AMENDMENTS TO THE SITE Mike and Emma will met with representatives from GEMISIS on 14th November to discuss the amendments to the site and confirming a way forward, together with timescales. The changes to be made include: Name to be incorporated in the design Inclusion of the group categories (see attached sheet - Group Categories) Inclusion of the word list Inclusion of a usage policy (see attached sheet - 'Our Policy) Description of the site (see attached sheet - 'About Us') Contact procedure Other minor design changes. The categorisation of sites is in line with the CVS classification. Groups could be listed in more than one group type. The 'Our Policy' has been kept as brief and as informal as possible. DOMAIN NAME Since the chosen name for the site is 'SALFORDSPEAKS' the domain name of www.salfordspeaks.org.uk will shortly be registered. TESTING OF THE SITE Once the changes have been made then testing will start, and will include: Entering details of groups Encouraging groups to try the discussion forum. Putting up news items MARKETING AND PUBLICITY It is intended to publicise the site through a number of ways: Community newsletters Local press ISAWARE - a public organisation that publicise ICT issues particularly with communities. Via the Community committee structure. The aim will be to attract groups who already have a web site, identify groups who want assistance in developing their own site and to generally use of the site and its' facilities.
