PROGRESS SUMMARY FOR THE SALFORD VIRTUAL COMMUNITY
20TH NOVEMBER 2000
COMMUNITY MEETING
A meeting was held at the Angel, Healthy Initiative, Chapel Street on the 7 th
November. The meeting was attended by representatives from City of Salford,
SARP, CVS, the Angel and Little Hulton One Stop Shop. Unfortunately
representatives from Broughton Resource Centre, SALI and the Valley Resource
centre were unable to attend.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the tasks to be completed for the
virtual community site and provide some feedback on the work that been undertaken
to date.
OVERALL TIMESCALE
It is likely that the site will 'go live' in early Jan.
A rough version of the site can be accessed currently on
http://195.44.254.86/salfordVC/ but it needs tidying up e.g. with wards, group
categories, description of the site, removal of made up groups names etc.
Testing of the site should commence prior to christmas.
The first stage of training will commence in mid January, however, between now
and then it is intended to develop a training manual.

TRAINING ARRANGEMENTS
Training covering web site design for an initially representatives from Community
Groups and ICT access centres will take place early in the new year. Between now
and then Mike Benjamin and James Holmes will draft a training manual covering the
main areas - from planning what to put on a site through to development of the site
using the zy tools. This should help in the training of further community and
voluntary groups once the site goes 'live'. An initial list of the areas it is intended
to cover is attached.
AMENDMENTS TO THE SITE
Mike and Emma will met with representatives from GEMISIS on 14th November to
discuss the amendments to the site and confirming a way forward, together with
timescales. The changes to be made include:







Name to be incorporated in the design
Inclusion of the group categories (see attached sheet - Group Categories)
Inclusion of the word list
Inclusion of a usage policy (see attached sheet - 'Our Policy)
Description of the site (see attached sheet - 'About Us')
Contact procedure
Other minor design changes.
The categorisation of sites is in line with the CVS classification. Groups could be
listed in more than one group type.
The 'Our Policy' has been kept as brief and as informal as possible.
DOMAIN NAME
Since the chosen name for the site is 'SALFORDSPEAKS' the domain name of
www.salfordspeaks.org.uk will shortly be registered.
TESTING OF THE SITE
Once the changes have been made then testing will start, and will include:



Entering details of groups
Encouraging groups to try the discussion forum.
Putting up news items
MARKETING AND PUBLICITY
It is intended to publicise the site through a number of ways:




Community newsletters
Local press
ISAWARE - a public organisation that publicise ICT issues particularly with
communities.
Via the Community committee structure.
The aim will be to attract groups who already have a web site, identify groups who
want assistance in developing their own site and to generally use of the site and its'
facilities.

ABOUT US
The purpose of 'SALFORDSPEAKS' is to help community and voluntary
groups create an independent community forum to publicise their group or
tell others about news, events and share information on issues which are
of mutual interest. For the first time there is an opportunity to find the
web sites of groups in Salford through one point.
