Healthy Communities Collaborative Project
Promoting engagement in the community
The Healthy Communities Collaborative (HCC) was re-launched in 2010 to
focus on two issues; firstly to raise awareness of risk factors of
Cardiovascular Disease, in the hope that people will access their G.P. to
get a free Health Check. Secondly; to raise awareness of the early
warning signs of oesophageal, stomach, bowel and lung cancer, and to
encourage people to go to the GP to get checked earlier rather than later,
so that less Salford people die.
Volunteers come from all walks of life with a variety of reasons for
wanting to get involved, but one common theme reoccurs; that of wanting
to do something positive. Because of this, the HCC focuses on
encouraging volunteers to really influence the choices of where and how
we work. This includes going to community festivals, supermarkets, pubs
and anywhere else that might be interesting to engage local people. We
deliver a serious message by being as imaginative and fun as possible,
through the power of volunteers.
The project is currently running teams in three areas of Salford;
Langworthy, Broughton and Barton / Eccles. Each of these teams have
regular meetings, where they work across their local area, attending local
community groups and events, to raise awareness of cardiovascular
disease and cancer screening, and to conduct free health check
questionnaires.
As part of the collaborative nature of the project, agencies like the British
Heart Foundation, The Stroke Association, Macmillan Cancer and the NHS
Health Bus have all been involved, offering training, providing resources
and getting involved directly with local people.
If you would like to know more about the project, know of groups that
might wish to get involved or have an interest, or would like to join one of
the teams please get in touch with Kieron McGlasson or Steve Jones on.
