DETAILS:
The attached documents have been produced to help inform the public about the leisure
facilities in the City and the huge range of activities on offer to young people in the City.
It must however, be acknowledged that this report only identifies the facilities and activities
offered by City Leisure and Sports Development. There are many private and voluntary

sports clubs and voluntary sports leaders which enhance the sporting provision across the
City.
Passport to Leisure 2002/3 - Doccument attached
The Passport to City Leisure clearly outlines the number and type of facilities across the
City, and the special offers available to the public if they become members of the Leisure
Centres.
The document also explains how members of the public can book the use of facilities and
gives useful telephone numbers for further information.
Summer Splash - Document attached
This document outlines the summer holiday activity programmes available to young people
across the City .The wide range of activities is supported and funded through a mixture of
mainstream provision and external grants to support additional activity. The programme
offers a range of activities and varying charges , with many activities being at no cost to the
young people engaged in the programmes.
The summer programme has been developed over many years responding to customer
demands. Last year’s Summer programme received national recognition for the innovative
links developed between museums, libraries and leisure centres. The Summer programme is
promoted as detailed below;














140,000 copies of ON in Salford (107,000 direct to all residential properties in the city)
(20,000 to venues, attractions, hotels, family venues)
1,000 stand alone copies for distribution via the hotline

Sports Development Activities programme – Report attached
The Sports Development team offer a range of courses and classes at various venues across
the City from pre – school activities to walks for the over 50’s.
The team has 3 main aims;
- To increase the number of people participating in sport
- To increase and improve the sports facilities in Salford
- To raise the standards of performance in Salford’s sports clubs.
The main focus of the work is with young people. The team provide coaching classes
throughout the year, as indicated in the attached activity report.
The Sports Development team also manage 2 facilities ie North Salford Gymnastics and

Trampoline Centre and the Watersports centre. These facilities are managed in this way as
their main focus is development activity supporting schools activity and club development.
Regeneration / Juvenile nuisance schemes.
The Sports Development team also manage a number of schemes in regeneration areas of
the City , or in areas experiencing high levels of juvenile nuisance. The approach to this
work has been to establish multi disciplinary teams working with young people to positively
engage them in sports activities. The team currently operate 4 such teams;
- SPARKY .. working in the Seedley, Langworthy area
- SAYO ..working in Ordsall
- Early Intervention Pilot Project ..working in Eccles and Claremont Weaste
- Weekend Activity Programme ..working in Eccles / Brookhouse
Exercise on Referral.
The exercise on referral scheme, delivered through Sports Development in partnership with
the PCT, provides exercise opportunities and support for people seeking health
improvements after referral from their GP. At the moment this project is restricted to certain
areas of the City, but funding is being sought to extend this project across the City. Clients
on this programme are given a personal exercise programme after consultation with the
Active Lifestyles Development Officer.
Conclusion;
The documents attached and the details above outline the facilities and activities offered
through City Leisure and Sports Development. The activities will vary throughout the year
dependant upon seasons, holiday periods, customer feedback and external funding
opportunities. The programme is therefore dynamic and as such the information given is
only up to date ‘ at that moment in time ‘.
