Overview of Design •Wood platform and towers. •Spiral tube using gravity. •PVC tube. •Newton’s Cradle •Stick with a needle. •Balloon with weight inside •Mouse Trap •Bottle Opener that plays “Rocky Top” •Costs: •Bottle opener: $10 •Needles: $4 •Everything Else: FREE 1. PVC Pipe Spinning down Spiral 2. Steel ball rolling down slope 3. Ball starting a Newton’s Cradle 4. Stick with needle on end falling onto balloon 1 5 2 3 6&7 4 5. Balloon popping, releasing pellets. 6. Pellets springing a mouse trap 7. Mouse trap connects batteries to speaker, beginning “Rocky Top” Hollow Cylinder (Angular Momentum) L=Iω Stick Balancing (Center of Mass) R = m1r1 + m2r2… m1 + m2… Ball Rolling down pipe ramp (COE) mgh=(1/2)mv² + (1/2)Iω² Newton’s Cradle (Collision/Linear momentum) m1v1 + m2v2 = m1v1’ + m2v2’ Trap Springing (Torque/Rotational Energy) τ = F•r•sin(θ) Spiral would not cooperate, had to make many different types. Stick would not pop balloons with nails, had to go buy actual needles. Could not find a suitable electronic device for the trap to set off. Once we got the piece we could not get the metal pieces to connect correctly We visually learned the applications from our lectures from the past four modules We learned that time management is a key to a successful group project. It was a fun, but intellectually tiring project.
