GENERAL DUTIES
Manages an on-site campus child care center to provide a safe and stimulating environment for children in the center’s
care.

Represents the center to a wide range of constituents within and outside the College
Manages planning, budgeting, facilities, and other administrative issues
Provides leadership in hiring, supervising, developing, and evaluating staff; oversees staff interaction with
students; assures adequate coverage during hours of operation
Develops appropriate learning programs and activities for children
Maintains compliance with relevant regulations and health and safety guidelines
Creates and maintains policy and procedure materials and assures the staff is trained appropriately
Provides on-site presence for parent communications and problem resolution
Performs related duties as assigned.

The Brooklyn College Early Childhood Center (BCECC) educates and cares for children of Brooklyn
College students and their families through best practice, which includes professional preparation for
undergraduate and graduate students, research to improve practice and inform theory in the field,
and outreach activities for infant, toddler and preschool teachers and teachers-in-training in Brooklyn,
New York City and internationally.
The BCECC community of children, families, teachers, staff, teachers-in-training and university faculty
work together to create, recreate and maintain developmentally appropriate practices that are
family-centered, relationship-based and informed by research and practices from a variety of local
and international pedagogies concerned with improving early childhood education and care for
ethnically and linguistically diverse young children with and without special needs and their families.
Also, the BCECC is rooted in a commitment to the inclusion and celebration of differences of all kinds,
to multilingual and multicultural education, and to early intervention. In service of these goals, the
arts, aesthetic education and play are at the heart of the BCECC curriculum.
Reporting to the Chairperson of the Department of Early Childhood and Art Education, the Director of
the Early Childhood Center (ECC) is responsible for the management and operations of the Early
Childhood Center, including oversight for Center programs, budgets, curricula and outreach
initiatives. The Director is also works closely with department faculty and program leadership to
provide fieldwork, student teaching and research opportunities.
The Director of the Early Childhood Center will:

Oversee the hiring, supervision and evaluation of all teachers, teaching assistants, fieldwork
interns and volunteers. Manage staffing patterns and classroom scheduling. Provide faculty
and staff development opportunities.

Oversee operations of all ECC programs, including the Day and Afterschool programs. Develop
and supervise the implementation of the curriculum and oversee program registration,
including waiting lists.

Oversee program budgets and related financing. Identify sources of funding, including grant
opportunities, to support program development and operational costs. Prepare follow-up
reports and other communication with funding agencies as required.

Maintain compliance with licensing and regulatory guidelines. Communicate with licensing
and regulatory agencies, including: NYC Dept. of Health, Division of Day Care, NYS Dept. of
Health, Division of Nutrition, NYS Dept. of Education and the National Association for the
Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Prepare documents and reports for the Board of Directors of the Brooklyn College Child Care
Services, Inc.

Develop and promote parent- and family-involvement activities at ECC orientation and other
events.

Develop and implement community outreach initiatives. Work closely with community
providers of early childhood care and education, early intervention programs, Committees on
Preschool Special Education, local school districts and other educational institutions.

Identify opportunities to promote the ECC to newly admitted and prospective undergraduate
and graduate students. Work closely with the Admissions and Student Affairs offices to
coordinate participation in student events and activities.

Work closely with college faculty and program leaders to coordinate fieldwork, student
teaching and research opportunities. Keep department faculty informed of research and
course instruction on child development, parent-child dyads, families as well as curriculum
and programmatic research in the ECC.

Participate in relevant meetings within the department, School of Education, College and
Central Office.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
BA in one or combination of following areas: Early Childhood Education, Business Management, Organizational
Management or Communications; MA preferred. Must meet NY State licensing requirements and all other regulatory
requirements for a child care director with 5+ years’ director experience in a licensed child care setting preferred, plus
three years teaching or supervisory experience.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education or a related field.
Experience as director, educational director, or other administrative role in a center serving infants, toddlers, and young
children with and without special needs, plus three years teaching young children. Must be able to lead a team, supervise

personnel, and manage all aspects of center activities, including maintaining positive relationships with the Department
and Brooklyn College at large. Must demonstrate a strong knowledge and understanding of child development, parenting,
developmentally appropriate practice, and how to incorporate these into the operation of a high-quality early child
center/laboratory. Must be able to work well within a culturally diverse environment.
