PROPOSED MANDATE FOR UNIVERSITY COUNCIL TITLE: Minor in General Management REASONS FOR THE PROPOSED MANDATE Business students with non-management majors have shown an increasing awareness of the need for management acumen in the real-world operations of their functional business disciplines and ultimately for building successfully careers. College of Arts and Science students have expressed an interest in augmenting their programs of study with a business component that allows them to experience the application of many of the theories learned in their major disciplines. Also, there are courses presently in existence in the College of Arts and Science with direct applicability to the function of management. The purpose for creating a minor in general management is to create a vehicle for business students majoring in other disciplines to augment their studies with managerial skills as well as to allow College of Arts and Science students to complement the knowledge and expertise of their chosen disciplines with structured, integrated general management content. Proposal for a Minor in General Management The business environment is a complex and dynamic system, demanding a variety of approaches encompassing diversified fields of knowledge. Such an eclectic combination of interests requires a common goal to maintain a cohesive identity. The minor in management emphasizes knowledge and concern for the ethical, human and global aspects of organizations, emphasizing a broad common body of knowledge as the basis for making sound decisions and meeting future challenges. Objective: To provide HSB students not majoring in management and A&S students the opportunity to expand their management skills by providing a base of theory and principles systematically applied in a variety of settings to effect successful administration. This proposal for a minor in general management is consistent with both the current GER and the recently approved GEP. In fact, because it mandates six free electives, the new GEP will allow students to more easily minor in general management than is the case under the present GER. Additionally, the integration of HSB and College of Arts and Science courses which is fostered by the general management minor is consistent with the spirit of the new curriculum. As a result, students majoring in either business or arts and science disciplines can experience their chosen profession from an augmented perspective as well as receive a benefit/advantage when searching for an entry level position at their time of graduation. The minor in Management constitutes 6 courses. These include: MGT 1011 – Organizations in Perspective MGT 1001 – Legal Environment of Business MGT 2001 – Management Skills (pre-req, MGT 1011) MGT2011 – Organizational Behavior (pre-req, MGT 1011, MGT 2001), and, Any two courses from the General Management Track: General Management Track (all course pre-requisites apply) MGT 2021 MGT2411 MGT 2421 MGT 2451 MGT 2461 MGT 2471 MGT 2531 MGT 2541 MGT 2551 MGT 2911 MGT 2951 MGT 2953 Management of Human Resources Legal Environment of Business II Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management Managing Workforce Diversity Business, Ethics and Society Negotiation Skills Perspectives on Leadership Social Entrepreneurship Business Law for Entrepreneurial Firms Independent Study Management Research Honors Research MGT 2971 MGT 2981 IBU 2421 IBU 2411 IBU 2441 ADM 2011 ECN 2041 POL 2071 PSY 1021 PSY 2021 PSY 2041 PSY 2301 PSY 2622 SOC 2201 SOC 2411 SOC 2735 Topics in Management Internship International Business Law Global Strategic Planning International Management Public Administration (POL 2091) Economics of Labor Government and Business Personality Research Methods* Multicultural Psychology Social Psychology Social Psychology Laboratory* Sociology of Work American Labor Movement Collective Bargaining (LAS 2735) *4 Credit Hour Courses No new course development is required by this proposal. All courses are presently in existence. Student must satisfy any course prerequisites, including enrollment caps. Thus, the general management minor will not require the use of additional sections of any course or consume more faculty resources. Student Demand The expected demand for the general management minor is difficult to estimate. Based upon anecdotal evidence from business students that have approached management department faculty as well as arts and science students who have inquired about the availability of this minor, initial demand is expected to approximate 30 students. What is especially exciting however is the prospect of attracting arts and science students who are interesting in expanding their programs with a management component as well as Haub students who are seeking an enhanced liberal arts perspective in their business education. Student Advising The management department will designate a faculty member responsible for coordinating the general management minor advising. We will encourage general management minors to meet with the minor coordinator often. However, the formal advising and formal pin number release will be handled through their major advisor in their respective department. Feedback from the College of Arts & Sciences Dr. Ed Balotsky (Chair of the Management Undergraduate committee) discussed the Management minor proposal with the Chairs of the Psychology, Sociology and Political Science Departments, who in turn consulted their faculties. The Chairs of the effected Departments expressed their approval and support of the Management minor. We look forward to on-going collaboration with these departments as changes occur.
