ESL 009 - Oral/Aural Skills

Course Description
This course is designed for developing listening comprehension and pronunciation skills for ESL students with low intermediate English proficiency. By using tapes of lessons and natural speech, the student should attain accuracy at the sound, word, and sentence level. Conversation practice will be based on topical discussions and readings.
This course is for students who have successfully completed ESL 006 or have an appropriate score on the placement test. To pass this course, students will be able to:
give short class presentations on a topic of interest.
speak in group discussions and make small talk.
speak with more fluency in a natural way with less hesitation.
practice pronunciation patterns they are having difficulty with.
comprehend short class lectures.
comprehend the gist of conversational English and longer passages.
expand their vocabulary in written and spoken forms.

Course Requirements
1.
Come to class on time! You are allowed no more than 2 absences and being more than 10 minutes late is considered an absence. This is a speaking/listening class that you can not do at home. If you are absent, you are still responsible for the assignments.
2.
Bring your books to class everyday.
3.
Do all out-of-class assignments. This will make the class go more smoothly, so please be considerate of others and do your homework. When asked to interview native speakers, do it.
4.
Participate. You will not become a better English speaker if you don’t practice.
5.
Complete the oral presentations. No make-up presentations will be given unless you have signed documentation.
6.
Prepare for vocabulary quizzes. These quizzes can not be made up. You will be able to drop the lowest quiz grade.
7.
Attend two teacher conferences.
8.
Participate in interviewing your native speaker partner(s).
Withdrawal- Failure to attend class is not an official withdrawal and will probably result in the assignment of an F grade. Please follow the rules as stated in the MCCC Handbook.
Code of Conduct- Cell phones are not permitted unless they are turned off. Advise me if there is an emergency for which you need a phone, in which case, I will allow it. Please be considerate of your fellow students and your teacher. The MCCC Handbook discusses appropriate classroom conduct and will be followed.
Academic Honesty- All forms of cheating will be dealt with according the official MCCC policy. If you are in doubt, please ask.

Grading
Your final grade will be based on attendance and participation, oral presentations, small group work, homework, interviews, in-class assignments, etc. A student must receive and A, B, or C to pass the course.
A= 90-100%
B= 80-89%
C= 70-79%
D= 60-69%
F= 59% or lower
