ADMINISTRATIVE AND PROFESSIONAL (NON-TEACHING) JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs/Director of Orientation
CODE: 0303
FUNCTION: Serve as a senior member of the Student Affairs Team with primary
supervisory responsibilities for New Student Orientation, Student Publications, and
Disability Services. Oversee Student Affairs leadership initiatives and Divisional
committees.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Direct and supervise New Student Orientation
personnel for fall, spring, and summer orientation programs. Supervise directors for
Office for Students with Disabilities and Student Publications. Coordinate programs and
activities for new and returning students through Welcome Week programs. Serve as cochair for Parents/Family Weekend as well as other committees as assigned. Oversee
Divisional committees such as Benchmarking, Professional Development, and External
Funding. Provide supervision, training, guidance, evaluation, and recognition to staff
members. Ensure professional development opportunities. Assist in the development of
long and short term goals for the Division of Student Affairs. Review policies and
procedures; make recommendation for changes and implement as appropriate. Serve as a
liaison for Student Affairs to departmental units and community agencies, working
collaboratively. Monitor budgets for all areas. Review policies and procedures; make
recommendation for changes and implement as appropriate. Other duties as assigned.

REPORTS TO: VP for Student Affairs
SUPERVISION:
INTERNAL CONTROL: Responsible for the design, execution, and effectiveness of a system
of internal controls which provides reasonable assurance that department operations are effective
and efficient, department assets are safeguarded, department financial information is reliable, and
the department complies with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposure to standard office conditions; Repetitive use of a
keyboard at a workstation; Use of manual dexterity; Climbing of stairs; Lifting and
moving; Position will require evening/weekend hours and occasional travel.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, or
related field. Minimum 6 to 10 years of higher education experience in progressively
responsible student affairs position; significant leadership experience at director level or
above; and management of New Student Orientation. Equivalent combination of relevant
education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Doctoral degree in Higher Education or related field.
Visionary and goal/result-oriented; knowledge of Student Publications and Students with
Disabilities; excellent oral and written communication skills; understand and articulate
the role of student affairs in higher education; good computer skills; budget planning and
management; knowledge of contractual and liability issues related to component areas;
ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize, and plan projects effectively; and
establish positive working relationship with students, colleagues, and peers.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Specific job requirements or physical location of position allocated to this classification render
the position security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code
§51.215.
