Locksmith Job Description TITLE: Locksmith JOB CODE: 6356 EFFECTIVE DATE: FLSA STATUS: NE EEO6 CODE: 6 = Skilled Crafts PURPOSE: To provide journeyman-level skills in the repair, resetting and installation of locking devices and the manufacture of keys. Responsible for the repairing, rebuilding, and resetting locks and for cutting keys for locks in buildings, cabinets, and lockers. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Makes keys for padlocks, doors, lockers, desks, and cabinets. Selects key blanks and cuts and fits keys to locks. Unlocks locks when keys are lost or broken. Changes the combination and resets locks for more than one key. Changes the combination and master key locks to grand master, building master, and numerous sub-masters. Cleans, changes and adjust combination locks on safes and mailboxes. Installs, maintains, adjusts, services and recombinates all types of locks and locking devices. Makes keys for locks using code book and key machine designed to make keys from code numbers. Performs preventive maintenance on all equipment. Fabricate numerous sizes and shapes of engraved signs, using the engraving machine and various types of engraving materials. Resharpen the cutters using the special grinder available. Performs related duties. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: REPORTS TO: General supervision from Locksmith Supervisor. SUPERVISION: N/A SUPERVISION-OTHER: None. REQUIRED EDUCATION: $education REQUIRED EDUCATION-OTHER: High school graduation. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES-OTHER: REQUIRED EXPERIENCES/COMPETENCIES: Three years of skilled/journeymanlevel experience as a locksmith. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Skill in the operation of key cutting machines, and hand tools of the locksmith trade. Proficient in all phases of the work performed and in following oral and written instructions. Working conditions are considered acceptable, but occasionally involve hazards in use of key cutter and other tools, and exposure to inclement weather on occasion. Alertness and careful attention is required to avoid injury to self and to other.
