ADMINISTRATIVE AND PROFESSIONAL (NON-TEACHING) JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Assistant Chief of Police
CODE: 0899
FUNCTION: To provide the necessary management skills to assist in the direction of the Police
Department staff of a component of The University of Texas System.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for administrative and supervisory
enforcement duties involving general and criminal regulations and institutional rules and
regulations in order to provide for the protection, safety, and welfare of students, employees, and
property within the areas under the control and jurisdiction of The University of Texas System
Police. Ensures the execution and effectiveness of a system of internal controls. Typical Duties:
Plans, organizes, and supervises Police Department activities; checks performance, appearance,
and conduct of commissioned and non-commissioned Police Department personnel; gives advice
and instruction concerning unusual phases of work; makes evaluation of subordinates’ work;
interviews and tests applicants for positions with the department; instructs in University police
training programs; makes evaluations and analyses concerning accomplishments of objectives;
makes recommendations to the Chief, University Police Department; prepares and reviews
various reports; assists in the preparation of the annual budget; confers with local law
enforcement agencies, court officials, government officials, and other officials on matters of
mutual interest; assists local police jurisdiction of The University of Texas System; on occasion,
serves as the Chief of Police and commands the department in the absence of the Chief; performs
related duties as assigned; Periodic Duties : Speaks to groups and organizations interested in
traffic, security, and criminal law enforcement.
ACCOUNTABILITY
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
REPORTS TO: Chief, University Police Department
SUPERVISON: General supervision to all members of the University Police Department staff.
EDUCATION
REQUIRED: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course
work in Criminal Justice or a related field
PREFERRED: Successful completion of Master’s Degree from an accredited college or
university with major course work in Criminal Justice or a related field; or completion of the Law
Enforcement Command College, the FBI National Academy, or the Southern Police Institute
Command School.
EXPERIENCE:
REQUIRED: Eight years of progressively responsible work as a commissioned police officer; a
minimum of two years at a management or supervisory level with the rank of Lieutenant or
above; a minimum or four years experience as a campus police officer; and possess Advanced
Certification issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and
Education.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess a current Peace Officer License issued by the Texas Commission on Law
Enforcement Officer Standards and Education. Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.
Must be in excellent physical condition. Specific job requirements or physical location of
position allocated to this classification render the position security sensitive and thereby subject
to the provisions of Texas Education Code
§51.215.
