Scientific Instrument Maker Supervisor Job Description TITLE: Scientific Instrument Maker Supervisor JOB CODE: 4340 EFFECTIVE DATE: FLSA STATUS: E EEO6 CODE: 6 = Skilled Crafts PURPOSE: To provide overall shop supervision and highly skilled fabrication, assembly and repair of complicated instruments and machines, normally used for scientific research, engineering, or teaching projects. Responsible for safe shop operations and for meeting precise scientific and engineering standards for all fabricated instruments and for supplying specified instruments to meet research or other production deadlines. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Plans, assigns and supervises shop operation. Consults with faculty, students and staff on complicated design, fabrication, modification and/or repair of research equipment. Prioritizes work to meet strict deadlines. Organizes and sets up equipment and tools for measurements. Instructs the users of the shop/laboratories on proper use of tools and safety rules and regulations. Maintains inventory, orders materials through UTA and outside vendors. Provides cost estimates on jobs being requested by other departments. operates various shop equipment, assembles parts and tests instruments for machine usage. Performs welding, carpentry and electrical repairs. Responsible for overall maintenance of the shop laboratories, tools and equipment. Performs other related duties. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: REPORTS TO: Self-supervising because of extensive technical or specialized knowledge and/or experience. Results appraised upon completion of program/project objective. SUPERVISION: N/A SUPERVISION-OTHER: Considerable supervision of productive effort to Scientific Instrument Maker I, II and students. Makes recommendations to hire, discipline and discharge subordinates. REQUIRED EDUCATION: $education REQUIRED EDUCATION-OTHER: High school graduation supplemented by vocational machine shop and technical courses such as mathematics, physics, or blueprint reading. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES-OTHER: REQUIRED EXPERIENCES/COMPETENCIES: Five years of experience as a journeyman machinist or instrument maker with some supervisory background. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Lathe, Milling Machine, Drill Press, Metal Saws, Electric tools, Sheet Metal Equip, Grinder, Measuring Equip, Woodworking Equip, Hand tools and Welding Equipment. Accuracy and precision in all phases of work performed. Working conditions may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals, power tools, heat and humidity. The wearing of protective attire and all safety precautions must be strictly observed.
