Dr. Mike Carrigan
Michael Carrigan was born in St. Paul,
MN. He attended the University of
Colorado at Boulder on a Navy ROTC
Scholarship. At the conclusion of his
service, he returned to his home state
to matriculate at the University of
Minnesota Medical School.
Mike and his wife have three children
and two Labrador mutts. He spends
his free time exercising, hiking,
mountain biking, camping, fishing,
skiing, snowshoeing, reading, brewing
beer, taking mediocre photos,
embarrassing himself on the
basketball court, harassing his family,
and eating good food.
Dr. Diana Cheng
Diana Cheng grew up in
Beijing China and moved to
California in the fifth grade.
Diana attended California
State University Fullerton
for undergrad, and Thomas
Jefferson University for
medical school.
In her spare time, she likes
spending time with her
family and four dogs,
gardening, meditating, and
enjoying the great outdoors.
Dr. Alex Fu
Alex was born and raised in Chicago,
IL, and attended Case Western
Reserve University for both his BS in
biomedical engineering and his MD.
Alex also did another year of research
in perioperative outcomes at
Cleveland Clinic.
His interests include electric guitar,
enjoys a variety of music (most
recently Italian opera!), snowboarding,
and [eating] food. Before starting his
intern year, he went backpacking for
40 days around 88 Buddhist temples
in Japan!
Dr. Admire Kuchena
Admire was born and raised in
Zimbabwe. After high school, Admire
moved to Minnesota where he
attended college at Carleton College.
Subsequently, Admire attended Mayo
Medical School and then moved to
Jacksonville, FL where he did his
internship at Mayo Clinic Florida.
Admire and his wife Chipo were
blessed with a beautiful daughter
Jade Tawana, born on May 27 2013.
In addition to loving the joys of new
fatherhood, Admire enjoys jogging in
the outdoors, traveling, and is a selfproclaimed avid cook.
Dr. Tomas Lazo
Tomas is originally from El Salvador,
but grew up mostly in New Jersey.
Tomas received his bachelors of
science from Cornell University in
Biological sciences. Tomas stayed in
the beautiful state of New York where
he attended Stony Brook University
School of Medicine.
Outside of science and medicine,
playing music is one of his biggest
passions. Tomas can play a variety of
different instruments, but percussion
has always been his favorite. Other
than music, he enjoys reading, hiking,
biking, video games, and playing
sports such as soccer, volleyball, and
badminton.
Dr. Travis Melin
Travis was born in Stevens Point,
Wisconsin. He received his
undergraduate and graduate
degrees from the University of
Wisconsin, La Crosse before
attending the Edward Via Virginia
College of Osteopathic Medicine
in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Outside of medicine, Travis enjoys
any form of rock climbing (multipitch speed climbing is where he
excels the most). He also enjoys
international travel, trail running,
unicycling, and hunting for wild,
edible mushrooms.
Dr. Tyler Paradis
Tyler Paradis, originally from Woodburn,
Oregon is excited to be back in the great
Northwest. Tyler is from Toledo, Ohio
where he attended medical school at
Toledo College of Medicine.
Tyler is married to his wife Sarah and
they have two children, Penelope and
Juliette. Tyler and his family have two
miniature Daschunds, Daisy and
Mickey. In addition to spending time in
the outdoors, Tyler enjoys traveling,
cooking/baking, watching college
football, and spending time with his
family and friends.
Dr. Austin Peters
Austin Peters was born outside of
Cleveland, Ohio, where he grew up with
an older sister and two younger
brothers. He attended Fordham
University in New York City where he fell
in love with science and
medicine. Following college, he attended
New York University School of Medicine
and participated in a research year
program.
He lives with his girlfriend and their 20
house plants. He is an avid runner and
cyclist, a decent cook, a consummately
underprepared outdoorsman, and a
constant reader. He has conducted
research in genetics, epidemiology and
clinical drug trials. He is thrilled to be
joining OHSU's Department of
Anesthesiology where he will pursue an
additional concentration in research in
the Oregon Scholars Program.
Dr. Justin Ramos
Justin was born in the Philippines,
and was five years old when his
family moved to California. Justin
grew up in Irvine, California and
Henderson, Nevada, where he
went to high school. Justin
attended college at the University
of Nevada, Las Vegas, and
medical school at the University of
Nevada School of Medicine, in
Reno.
Justin interests include
snowboarding, wakeboarding,
hiking, camping, tennis, travel,
cooking, baking, and of course
eating great food.
Dr. Michelle Tully
Michelle grew up in Spokane, WA
where she attended Whitworth
University for undergraduate. In
2009, she moved to Portland, OR
for medical school at OHSU.
Michelle enjoys spending time
with her family and friends. She
likes being outdoors, especially
running on the downtown Portland
waterfront and playing co-ed flag
football on the weekends. She
also loves to bake and experiment
with recipes to make healthier
substitutions without
compromising the taste. She is
excited to be part of the Oregon
Scholars Program. She chose it
because she knew she wanted to
pursue fellowship training in
critical care medicine.
Dr. Ashley Valentine
Ashley is from Wisconsin, and
grew up in the small town of
Verona, which is just outside of
Madison. Ashley’s husband,
Andrew, and herself are outdoors
people. She looks forward to the
time when our daughter, Aubrielle,
can enjoy the things they do like
cycling, hiking, climbing, jogging,
and ultimate Frisbee. Ashley is a
huge fan of jazz music,
microbrews, and cooking meals
for friends and family. Ashley has
lived in/traveled to many countries
including France, Madagascar,
Chile, Thailand, and Taiwan and
before medical school.
Fellows
Critical Care Medicine Fellow
Dr. Ryan Laterza
Ryan is originally from Ogden, Utah. He
received his Bachelor of Science in
Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical
Engineering from the University of
Colorado at Boulder in 2006. He then
attended medical school at the
University of Colorado, Denver, and
received his Doctor of Medicine degree
in 2010. He then moved to New York
City for residency training in
Anesthesiology at Mount Sinai Medical
Center and graduated in 2014.
His personal interests include traveling,
skiing, and tennis.
Pain Medicine Fellow
Dr. Eugene Hsu
Eugene is a physician innovator who is passionate
about improving the delivery of high value
healthcare. He completed residency training in
Anesthesiology & Critical Care medicine at Johns
Hopkins with a concurrent fellowship in Patient
Safety and Quality at the Armstrong Institute. He has
several first-author publications in peer-reviewed
medical journals and has worked at the Centers for
Medicare and Medicaid Innovation Center, Johnson
& Johnson Development Corporation, The Monitor
Group, and 3V SourceOne Venture Capital.
He completed his undergraduate studies at Duke
University and his MD and MBA at Dartmouth
Medical School and the Tuck School of Business.
Eugene is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Spanish
and proficient in Japanese. He has traveled to over
30 countries and 6 continents.
Pain Medicine Fellow
Dr. Nathan Sneddon
Nathan Sneddon attended the
University of Nebraska Medical Center
for medical school, completed his
intern year at the University of Texas,
San Antonio, and residency in
Anesthesiology at the University of
Nebraska Medical Center. His hobbies
and interests include road racing, half
and full marathons, trail running,
hiking, snow skiing, Nebraska
Cornhusker football, 19th century
American history, and spending time
with his wife and three daughters.
Pain Medicine Fellow
Dr. John Young
John was born in Portland, OR at OHSU while
his father was attending medical school. After
moving ten times with the Navy, his family
finally settled down in Utah. At age 19, John
served a 20-year mission for The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in exotic
Oklahoma City, OK. After his mission, he met
his wife Michelle while they attended Brigham
Young University. John attended medical
school and completed residency in
Anesthesiology at the University of Oklahoma
HSC before accepting this fellowship position
at OHSU. He’s excited to finally be back
where he started!
John and Michelle have two children, Ellie
(age 5) and Timmy (age 1). John’s favorite
things are spending time with his family,
college football, and chocolate chip cookies.
Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellow
Dr. Emily Olsen
Emily Olsen was born in Panama City,
Florida to an Air Force family. Her childhood
was spent travelling mostly between Hawaii
and Georgia. She attended college at
Valdosta State University in Valdosta,
Georgia, then went on to pursue a two year
post-baccalaureate research fellowship in
prion (neurodegenerative) diseases with the
National Institutes of Health branch in
Hamilton, Montana. This was followed by
medical school at the University of
Washington (UW) WWAMI program, then a
year-long internal medicine internship with
UW, as well. Emily just completed her
residency at OHSU. More recently, Emily has
also returned to pursuing neurodegenerative
research with her mentor, Dr. Ansgar
Brambrink.
Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellow
Raquel was born and raised in Houston,
Texas. After graduating high school, she
attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas,
graduating in 2005 with a B.S. in
Neuroscience. She then moved to Fort
Worth, Texas where she completed medical
school at The University of North Texas
Health Science Center in 2010. Raquel went
on to complete her internship and
Anesthesiology residency at Rush University
Medical Center in Chicago, where she
served as chief resident and gave a Grand
Rounds presentation on the management of
the adult Fontan patient. Her hobbies include
running, hiking, and yoga, as well as trying
out new restaurants with her husband, Tony,
and their friends. She is looking forward to
living in Portland.
Dr. Raquel Hernandez
Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellow
I was born in southern California but raised in
Atlanta, Georgia. I attended Tulane University for
undergraduate education where I graduated in
2006. I then moved to Columbia, South Carolina to
attend The University of South Carolina School of
Medicine and graduated in 2010. I completed my
intern year and anesthesiology residency in NYC at
The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. I
have loved my time in NY but am certainly ready for
more open spaces and time spent outdoors. My
husband, Brian, will be splitting his time between
NYC (primarily) and Portland. He works in finance.
We both love to cook and are active people. He's a
runner and enjoys cross fit classes whereas I'm
more of a spinning/yoga/pilates kind of gal. Either
way, we're both excited to have access to more
outdoor activities in Portland.
Dr. Natalie Barnett
Regional Anesthesia Fellow
Matthew has called Southern
California home for most of his life.
His Christian background led him
to Loma Linda University for
medical school and residency.
When not at the hospital, Matthew
enjoys playing ice hockey, hiking,
biking, eating good food, and
watching Portlandia.
Dr. Matthew Matiko
Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Fellow
Eleanor Vega was in a military family so
she moved around a lot. She attended the
University of Florida for undergrad and
went to medical school at Duke University.
She completed her Anesthesiology
residency training at OHSU. During
residency, Eleanor participated in a HOPE
trip to Lima, Peru.
In her spare time, Eleanor loves to travel
and dance. She is looking forward to
beginning her Cardiac Anesthesia
fellowship.
Dr. Eleanor Vega
Faculty
Dr. Ryan Fink
Ryan received his undergraduate
degree from the University of
Michigan before attending
medical school there, as well. He
completed his Anesthesiology
residency at Duke University,
where he was also Chief
Resident, and a Critical Care
Fellowship at Duke, as well.
Dr. Emily Guimaraes
Emily completed her anesthesiology training
at MGH, serving as their chief resident in
2003-2004. She remained on staff at the
MGH for 10 years, working in the main OR
and as a core member of their Thoracic and
OB anesthesia teams. In addition, she has
expertise in perioperative medicine and in outof-OR anesthesia, and has in the past led
their teaching efforts both for medical
students and for orientation of new
residents. For the last year Emily has worked
part time at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Boston,
focusing primarily in anesthesia for thoracic
surgery, as well as on parenting their two
sons, now 3 and 5. Emily's husband Alex will
also be joining the OHSU faculty, as Section
Head in Body Imaging.
Dr. Christine Martin
Dr. Christine Martin attended
Washington University in St. Louis for
her undergraduate double-major
degree in Psychology and Spanish.
She completed an internship at
Peking Union Medical College in
Beijing, China and then attended the
University of California, San
Francisco for medical school. She
also completed her anesthesia
residency there and just completed a
pediatric anesthesia fellowship at
OHSU. She is excited about
becoming faculty at OHSU and has
been enjoying living in Portland with
her family.
Dr. Amy J. Opilla
Amy grew up in Richmond, VA, majored in
psychology at James Madison University,
and then went to medical school at the
University of Virginia. After all of those
years in the same state, Amy was ready to
branch out and try something new for
residency! She moved to New York City for
a transitional internship at St. Vincent's
Catholic Medical Center in Manhattan, then
made the cross country move to Portland
for anesthesia residency. Virginia was too
small, NYC was too big, but Portland
turned out to be just the right size! Outside
of work, Amy enjoys running, yoga,
snowboarding, going to see live music,
wine tasting, and pretty much any outdoor
activity when the weather is nice.
Dr. Katie Schenning
Katie grew up on a dairy farm in
Northeastern Wisconsin, about 30 miles
north of Green Bay. She received a BS,
MD, and MPH from the University of
Wisconsin in Madison. During residency,
she was involved in multiple research
projects under the mentorship of Drs. Mike
Hutchens and Nabil Alkayed. Katie was
also fortunate to participate on a HOPE
trip with Dr. Judy Freeman in Khammam,
India. Katie, and her husband Ryan (who
began an Interventional Radiology
Fellowship at OHSU in July), have a crazy
little Jack Russell/Dachshund named Remi
who keeps them busy.
Dr. Andrei Sdrulla
Andrei was born and raised in Romania
and moved to Bend, Oregon at age 15. He
graduated from Stanford University with a
degree in biological science and then
completed the combined MD and PhD
program at Johns Hopkins University in
Baltimore, MD. Andrei stayed at Hopkins
for his Anesthesiology residency and is
very excited to return home to the Pacific
northwest. Outside of work, Andrei spends
time with his wife Rachel, a nurse
practitioner, and two daughters. Andrei
used to have hobbies that included fly
fishing, jogging and playing tennis, but they
have been mostly replaced by changing
diapers and household chores.
Dr. Evan Serfass
Evan received his B.A. from Rice
University, graduating Magna Cum
Laude. He then received his MD/PhD
from Albert Einstein College of
Medicine.
He
completed
his
Anesthesiology residency at Stanford
University
and
a
Pediatric
Anesthesiology Fellowship at Lucile
Packard Children’s Hospital. For the
last couple of years, Evan has been in
Austin, Texas. When not at work, he
enjoys
cooking,
hiking
and
photography. He and his wife have a 2
½ year old son, Reid and another son
on the way.
Dr. Derick Du Vivier
•Derick Du Vivier is the 2013-14 International
Affairs Fellow for Japan, Council on Foreign
Relations. Based at the Meiji Institute for
Global Affairs in Tokyo, he has conducted
research on global healthcare policy and
innovation in biotechnology. Dr. Du Vivier’s
residency was conducted at Beth Israel
Deaconess Medical Center and Mount Sinai
Hospital. Prior to being awarded the Council
on Foreign Relations Fellowship, he held
physician leadership positions including
medical staff president and department chief.
He holds degrees from Emory University
School of Medicine (MD), Duke University
(MBA) and the University of Chicago (BA). In
his private time, he can be found enjoying the
outdoors with his wife and three children, in the
judo dojo, or traveling.
CRNA
Glenn Pearson CRNA
Glenn is originally from Central
Mississippi and was educated at The
University of Southern Mississippi. While
later completing his anesthesia training
at Florida Gulf Coast University. Glenn’s
interests include watching soccer, hiking
with the wife and dogs, skiing (poorly),
traveling and almost anything
outdoors. I've been married 7.5 years to
my wife Lauren and in the picture I am
doing what I do best: Chillin and Grillin
Jake McLain CRNA
Jake McLain is a Portland native who
graduated from OHSU's nurse anesthesia
program in December of 2013. Jake
previously earned a Master of Education
and a B.S. in music from Portland State
University. He taught privately and played
saxophone in various jazz groups in the
Portland metro area for over ten years. Jake
went on to complete a B.S. in nursing from
University of Portland and worked at
Providence Portland Medical Center in their
med/surg ICU and CVL for five years before
attending OHSU's NAP. In his spare time,
Jake likes to exercise, ski, garden and try
new restaurants. Most of all he likes to
spend time with his wife Lisa, their newborn
son Elijah and their cat and two dogs.
Esther Iverson CRNA
Esther is originally from Bellingham,
Washington. She is a graduate of the
Nurse Anesthesia Program at
OHSU. She attended the University
of Washington and Loma Linda
University and her educational
background includes an MPHc in
Biostatistics and Epidemiology. In
her spare time she enjoys traveling to
sunny destinations, cooking, camping
and reading. She is happy to be
working with such a talented and
welcoming team here at OHSU.
Nurse Practitioners
Sarah Aragon, ACNP, Cardiac ICU
Sarah received her Bachelor
of Science in Nursing in 2006
from New Mexico State
University and her Master of
Science in Nursing – Acute
Care in 2012 from Vanderbilt
University. She has been
working in Santa Fe, New
Mexico since and is looking
forward to providing quality
health care at OHSU.
Craig Hutto, ACNP, Neuro ICU
Craig received his Bachelor of
Science in Nursing from
Middle Tennessee State
University in 2011 and his
Master of Science in Nursing,
Adult-Gerontology Acute Care,
from Vanderbilt University in
2013. Prior to joining OHSU,
Craig was working for
Tennessee Valley Healthcare
System, VA Hospital and
Vanderbilt University School of
Nursing as a Faculty Research
Associate. He is a huge sports
fan and enjoys fishing,
kayaking, disc golf, and live
music.
