CENTER for ETHICS in HEALTH CARE 3181 SW Sam Jackson Park Road UHN-86, Portland, OR 97230 (503) 494-4466 fax: (503) 494-1260 www.ohsu.edu/ethics ethics@ohsu.edu POLST Program Innovation Dear Friends, Excellent stewardship of the time and funds that are generously entrusted to the Center is a very high priority. Our goal is to be the very best investment you can make when donating your time or your dollars to the Center. In addition to making the best use of our resources, we are creating a forum for statewide health care ethics leaders to address this issue at the 22nd Annual Kinsman Ethics Conference. “Stewardship in the Age of Automony: Can we ever say no?” will be held in Portland, April 19 & 20, 2012. We are national leaders in-endof-life care and we are well positioned to lead the way to further improvements in health care. To do so we need your support to build a more stable financial base for the Ethics Fellowship and to raise additional funds to support further the innovation and development of the interprofessional curriculum. Ann Barden (barden@ohsu.edu) and I welcome the opportunity to talk with you in more detail about your specific interests. We value your unwavering support of the Center. With all best wishes and deep thanks. Susan W. Tolle, MD Cornelia Hayes Stevens Chair Director, Center for Ethics in Health Care November 2011 Thanks to a generous gift from the Alyce R. Cheatham Family Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation, Oregon continues to provide leadership and innovation in the POLST Program. Filming is scheduled next week at Mirabella and Mary’s Woods for a new video to provide better answers to such questions as "Who should have a POLST form?" Submission rates to the Oregon POLST Registry remain consistently high with over 80,000 forms submitted thus far. As Oregon leads the way, POLST use continues to roll out across the country. Montana became the 14th endorsed state and another 20 states are in development. Intensive mentorship of five states (Maine, Louisana, Tennessee, New Hampshire and Idaho) has been launched with funding from The Retirement Research Foundation. To mentor developing states, we are partnering with POLST leaders in California, serving as faculty and co-sponsoring the first National POLST Paradigm Conference in February, 2012. Advisory Council—The Next Chapter As the Center’s programs continue to flourish, and have become an integral part of OHSU’s expanding interprofessional educational mission, the Advisory Council is turning its focus to the sustainability and long-term funding needs of the Center. In order to meet this new development challenge, the Council has established a Steering Committee charged with developing a 5-year plan to meet the future financial needs of the Center. Steering Committee members include Bill Whitsell, Bill Early, Mary Oldshue, Lisa Andrus-Rivera, Barbara Durkheimer, Susan Tolle, Robert Shook, and Ann Barden. We look forward to their recommendations. Madeline Brill Nelson Speaker to Advance Interprofessional Education Phyllis Beemsterboer and Lynn Jansen co-chair the Teaching Interprofessional Ethics (TIE) team whose focus is to advance collaborative educational programs in ethics and professionalism across the undergraduate clinical schools at OHSU. TIE has invited Judith Buchanan, PhD, DMD, from the University of Minnesota to spend May 17th consulting with us as the 2012 Madeline Brill Nelson Speaker. She will be speaking on “Interprofessional Education: Why do it, how to do it, and what role can ethics play?” Ethics Fellowship Builds Teaching Capacity OHSU’s new Provost, Jeanette Mladenovic, MD, MBA, is passionate about enhancing interprofessional education. She views ethics and professionalism as ideal content for shared curriculum. We need to train more faculty to meet the rapidly growing demand for interprofessional education. The two year Fellowship in Interprofessional Health Care Ethics is designed to do exactly that. The 2011 graduates, Mariann Hyland, JD, MSW, Jennifer S. Needle, MD, MPH, Catherine A. Salveson, RN, PhD, Lynn F. Shaker, MPH, RN, Mary Spiering, RN, MN, CNS, and Amy C. Vandenbroucke, JD, bring expertise in professionalism from the disciplines of medicine, nursing, social work and law.
