We will be utilizing private transportation and our luggage will be transferred for us so that we

scenery.
The Queen Charlotte Track, located at the top of New Zealand’s South Island in the Marlborough
Sounds, offers a spectacular trip through the Marlborough Sounds, from the historic Ship Cove through
to Anakiwa in the Grove Arm giving unsurpassed views of Queen Charlotte and Kenepuru Sounds.
The Queen Charlotte Sound is the more well known of the three Sounds, and is dominated by
bush-clad shorelines, deep bays and coves, while the Kenepuru Sound is the smallest of the
three Sounds.
Stretching between the Queen Charlotte and
Keneperu Sound is the Queen Charlotte Track. A
70km track renowned for its stunning views and
contrasting landscape, historical landmarks and
wonderful variety of native bush and wildlife.
Visitors to the Queen Charlotte Track will find this
a unique walk as it passes through lush coastal
forest, historic bays, and along skyline ridges with
unsurpassed views of Queen Charlotte and
Kenepuru Sounds. This walk is as much about a walking holiday as it is an environmental,
cultural and lifestyle experience. While the Queen Charlotte Track is not a steep track it is a long
track. This means that the distances walked each day (especially from Camp Bay to Anakiwa) can be
challenging.
The terrain of the track is regarded as undulating with hills ranging from sea level to a
maximum of 400 meters. Most of the track is wide (1 to 1.5 meters in width), and all major
streams have been bridged. The surface, being mainly clay soil, is hard and firm in dry
conditions but can often be slippery when wet. For walkers, the track requires boots and a good
level of fitness.
The Nydia track is a wonderful 2 day walk (approximately a 4-5 hour walk from either end) on a
track maintained by the Department of Conservation.
It crosses the Kaiuma and Nydia saddles with superb views and follows the sheltered shoreline
of historic Nydia Bay on Pelorus Sound. Formed by linking old bridle paths, the 27km track
meanders through a variety of regenerating native bush and beautiful untouched forest.
Trekking New Zealand’s trails is one of the most rewarding ways of seeing the country’s
outstanding natural beauty. Discover the idyllic coastal tracks in the Marlborough Sounds with
its many hidden coves and the crystal clear waters of the Tasman Ocean. Explore the wild West
Coast with its rugged coastline, lush rainforest, and glaciers. Take an exciting jet boat ride to a
remote valley in the Mt Aspiring National Park and trek to Rocky Mountain and Diamond Lake.
Enjoy an overnight cruise in the world famous Milford Sound before hiking to Key Summit on
the Routeburn Track for panoramic views over the Humboldt and Darran Mountains to
complete this stunning adventure.
Accommodations:
The accommodation used for the AMC South Island Trekking is pitched at the mid-range level
with a choice of double and twin share rooms at the 3-3.5 star level. A single supplement is
available as well – except in a couple of locations where the room availability is very
limited. These rooms are en suited (again with two exceptions being the Lodge on Nydia Bay
track and the overnight on Milford Sound where shared facilities are offered.
Meals; Food & how it is provided:
An army marches on its stomach, and this trip is no different. All but two breakfasts are
provided on tour along with 8 lunches. These lunches are often those we will eat while on the
trail and our modus operandi is to provide the makings of your lunch for you to mix and match
accordingly. A full range of fillings and fruit plus bars and sweets are laid out for you to create
the ultimate sandwich, and our outfitter will even provide the lunch pail to carry it in. Breakfast
will usually be provided by the accommodation we stay in but at times our guides may even
produce it for you. Usually you will have the choice of a continental or cooked breakfast - or
both if you prefer. Dinners are supplied as part of the trip, in those places where there are no
options – like the overnight stay on the wonderful Milford Sound. Otherwise you have the
choice of some amazing restaurants and eateries, let alone the magnificent New Zealand fish
and chips (in kiwi language I guess it does sounds like fesh and cheeps!) on the lake edge. From
the most basic eater to the sophisticated palette, we will have something for everyone.

seen as a guide only. This itinerary may change at any time due to inclement weather, forces of
nature and other circumstances beyond our control.
As a general rule, November to April are the most ideal months for travelling in New Zealand’s
stunning outdoors. One of the most important things travelers need to know about the New
Zealand climate is that it’s a maritime climate, as opposed to the continental climate typical of
larger landmasses. Thanks to its position in the path of the ‘Roaring 40s’ and mountainous
terrain, New Zealand’s weather can frequently change with amazing rapidity. Because the
weather can change so unexpectedly you should be prepared for sudden changes in
temperature and weather conditions. This basically means having a good waterproof jacket and
some warm clothing. You don’t need to bring your winter wardrobe but a good fleece/jumper
and good thermals are a must. The temperature during the South Island summers range from
45-75 F, with a pleasant 40- 50% humidity. Higher altitudes are always considerably cooler and
snowfall is not uncommon even in summer. The Southern Alps of New Zealand act as a barrier
to the moisture laden winds coming west across the Tasman Sea, creating a wet climate on the
west side of the mountains and a drier climate on the east side. The geography also creates a
wind pattern, which can in summer be very hot, dry and fierce. Maximum temperatures we
may encounter range up to 75 F. Minimum temperatures expected in the Southern Alps in
Summer time are around 25 F.
By its very nature adventure travel involves an element of the unexpected. To get the most out
of your adventure it is important that you are mentally flexible, positive and eager to take on all
the challenges that arise.
AMC Adventure Travel trips are led by volunteers on a non-profit basis. Any monies left over
after trip expenses are covered will be refunded to the participants. As leaders our goals for the
group are to have fun, stretch your skills, and savor a foreign culture at reasonable cost and in
the company of other adventurers with similar interests. We encourage your individual
contributions, cooperation and good humor to enrich the group’s experience. We expect you to
participate as part of a group and abide by the leaders’ decisions, and work towards the group
having a good time. Be prepared to help your fellow hikers and spend time with other
participants on the trip. In doing so, you will enjoy the trip to the maximum.
