Fly to Buenos Aires to El Calafate. Glacier tour. Travel to El Chalten for 2 day hikes in
Los Glacieres NP (Laguna Torre, Laguna de los Tres) & ice trekking on Viedma
Glacier). Travel to Chile to hike the W in TDP, staying three nights in refugios, one night
in hotel in Park. There will be two nights in Natales before the W and one night after.
Return flight from Punta Arenas via Santiago to U.S.
Hotels, hostels and lodges; W Lodges average about $100 per person with all meals;
hotels/hostels about $50 or less per person, with breakfast.
All meals in TDP included; all breakfasts will be provided when outside the park. Other
meals on own in restaurants, box lunhes available at hostels. Farewell meal included.

All park permits aranged by Mitsana Travels Chile. There is a one time entry fee for
visitors to enter Argentina, which individuals must pay in advance (about $160 US).

Participants must have at least intermediate backpacking experience and be in good
physical condition. The trip screening process will involve e-mail and telephone
communications, augmented with personal reference checks (i.e. speaking with leaders

We will be seeing and learning about an entirely different ecology than that of
the Whites and New England; there will be the opportunity to see glaciers,
animals such as guanaco, flamingos, rhea, and huemul (a threatened species of
Andean deer).

common; there are a few stretches of trail in TDP with stream crossings and rough

Medical facilities are far from TDP.
Response
There is communication to the outside world at the various refugios we will use. In
Argentina and Chile, we will be staying in towns and hotels with phone service and local
police and fire departments. Sam was able to deal with a medical evac from TDP in
2014, with great help from Mitsana and Park and refugio staff.

All refugios in TDP have comunication with outside world and we will never be more
than a several hours from one of them.
El Calafate and El Chalten are pretty small places. The nearest real medical facility
appears to be in Rio Gallegos, about 450km. Medical facilities are three to six hours
away from TDP (in Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas), both reachable by public bus.

Summary of Itinerary:
• Saturday Day 1 (Feb 28) – depart US east coast
• Day 2 – arrive pm in FTE (new hostel, as suggested by Marcia)
• Day 3 – rest day; bird sanctuary visit
• Day 4 – Perito Moreno tour (with Monica Vaccaro) and transport to Chaltén (Albergue Patagonia)
• Day 5 – Hike Laguna Torre
• Day 6 - Hike Laguna de los Tres
• Day 7 – Viedma Glacier ice trek (or local hikes)
• Day 8 – travel to Puerto Natales (Hostal Amerindia)
• Day 9 – Visit Milodon Caves, attend seminar about TDP, do laundry, etc.
• Day 10 – public bus to Pudeto, catamaran to Paine Grande at noon; hike to R. Grey (Stay)
• Day 11 – Visit mirador past Grey/Hike back to Paine Grande (Stay there)
• Day 12 – hike to R Cuernos (side trip up French Valley for those interested and able) (stay)
• Day 13 – hike to Hosteria las Torres for some luxury…and to leave our heavy stuff there while we hike
to the mirador the next day)
• Day 14 – hike early to Torres mirador and hike out to Hosteria las Torres and arrange private transfer to
Puerto Natales (stored luggage will be at hostel) (stay at Amerindia);
• Saturday Day 15 (Mar 14) – public bus from Natales to PUQ, arriving by noon for afternoon flights.
Folks who want to go to Punta Arenas can stay on bus. Those who want to stay on in Natales can do so
and take the bus to the airport whenever they wish.
