RISK ASSESSMENT
Please assess the risks and hazards of your trip. Carefully consider each area of risk and how it may affect your trip.
Devise a plan to prevent each hazard and to respond to it if it becomes necessary. Please be very specific for each section
if applicable.
Trail conditions, river crossings, weather, wildlife (bears, snakes, etc.)
Climate/terrain
Potential hazards
August is the end of their dry season, wet conditions may be a factor. It is also the end
of their midge bug season, though rain and fog can happen in Scotland at any time of
year. Terrain navigation: The hikes will be on well-marked trails, majority of hiking is in
tree-less areas but at low altitude (less than 3500’).
Response
Leaders will evaluate any river crossings and will determine at that time if it is prudent to
turn back. Bug spray and/or bug net will be recommended to the participants.
Paraticipants will be told to bring weather gear for the White Mountains at the same time
of year which should be sufficient. Leaders will have 1:50,000 Ordance Survey Maps
and compass.
Political concerns, crime, language translation, terrorism
Foreign Country
Potential hazards
English speaking Scotland is first world, law abiding, and very hiker/visitor
friendly. There is a referenddum in September 2014 where Scotland will vote on
whether or not to seek independence from the United Kingdom. Leaders will watch this
carefully. We may be visiting the world's youngets independent country in 2015.
Response
Pay attention, pretty much as if we were in the US.
Road conditions, drivers, insurance
Transportation
Potential hazards
UK Drivers drive on the left side of the road which will be unusual for the leaders.
Hikes will be car spots, so vehicles will be left unattended for 24 to 48 hours at a time.
Response
Leo Kelly has driven in the UK on three separate trips. Extra care will be taken and
reminders will be posted on the windshield to assist leaders. Extra caution will be given
to securing passports and valuables.
Level of fitness, screening concerns, experience with equipment or activity
Participants
Potential hazards
Participants who cannot backpack 8+ miles per day
Response
Bail out plans and contingencies will be set prior to each backpack. A full screening
process will eliminate many potential problems and those that arise will

be dealt with on an individual basis. Both leaders have extensive group leadership
experience and are practiced at handling uncomfortable situations. Potential health
threats will be aired during the screening process so leaders will be aware of participants'
risks.
