Conservation, education and

How will this AMC-AT trip meet the
mission of the AMC?
www.outdoors.org/about/mission.cfm
Conservation: participants will discover the practicality of using non-polluting,
human-powered transport for long distance touristic travel; Education: we will be
able to visit several sites where conservation initiatives take place, such as a wind
farm and protected animal habitats; Recreation: through the fun activity of
bicycling we will enjoy site-seeing at the slow pace of bicycle travel.
TOUR OPERATOR AND GUIDE SERVICE INFORMATION

trip?

Yes
No
Please describe their services. If you are using a tour operator for the entire trip,
please describe why you will be using them rather than doing this trip on your own:
Although we WILL NOT use a tour operator or guide service, we DO plan to hire a
delivery service -- a licensed taxi driver with a van -- who will transport luggage from
one night's lodging to the next. This, instead of a traditional "SAG Wagon" following
the group the entire time. The driver and van will be on call in case of emergency or
mechanical failure. We have budgeted money for this in our trip budget on the line for
"cost of guides or outfitters."

RISK ASSESSMENT
Please assess the risks and hazards of your trip. Carefully consider each area of risk and how it may affect your trip.
Devise a plan to prevent each hazard and to respond to it if it becomes necessary. Please be very specific for each section
if applicable.
Trail conditions, river crossings, weather, wildlife (bears, snakes, etc.)
Climate/terrain
Potential hazards
Car traffic on roads.
Participants getting lost.
Exhaustion and dehydration.
Weather, wind and rain.
Mechanical failure.
Bike accident.
Bike theft.
Response
Car traffic on roads: we will ride with one leader in front and another at the rear.
Participants will be advised to wear high-visibility clothing. We will favor lightlytraveled roads with lower speeds and wide shoulders.
Participants getting lost: we will provide cue sheets for each day of the trip. Routes will
be kept relatively simple. We will position leaders at the front and back of the group.
Leaders will have two-way radios or cell phones so they may be contacted if a
participant is extremely far off course.
Exhaustion and dehydration: we will have rest and bathroom breaks so participants can
take a break from riding and to refill water bottles. Participants will be advised to carry
and consume 4-6 l of fluids/day and to eat high-energy foods as they ride. We will
arrange for a taxi service to be on call in case a participant needs a ride.
Weather, wind and rain: In general, we will travel in the direction of the winds and, on
windy days, we can take inland routes. Participants will be advised to bring rain gear and
equipment appropriate for wet conditions, such as wide touring tires and new brakes.
Trip is chosen for a time of year when temperatures are mild.
Mechanical failure: participants will be asked to have their bikes checked by a mechanic
before the trip and to carry tire repair kits. One of the leaders is a skilled bike mechanic
and will carry a basic set of tools. For significant equipment failure, we will have a taxi
service on call.
Bike accident: we will call emergency services and otherwise manage the accident scene.
Much of accident management is in prevention. Participants are required by local law to
wear helmets. Participants will be advised to bring properly functioning and appropriate
bicycling equipment for the conditions to help prevent accidents. Leaders will devise an
emergency plan and will educate participants on what to do in case of an accident. One
leader is a wilderness first responder. The phone numbers for emergency services will be
carried by both leaders. Participants will be advised on proper group riding skills.

Bike theft: bikes will be locked in hotels in the evening. During the day, a "bike watcher"
will be assigned any time the group dismounts with plans to leave the bikes behind.
Political concerns, crime, language translation, terrorism
Mistranslation of French to English.
Incorrect conversion of metric to U.S.A. customary units.
Differences in ettiquette between Prince Edward Island and USA
Mistranslation: Most of the region is English-speaking, however the co-leader reads and
speaks French. No significant hazard is anticipated.
Incorrect conversions from metric to U.S.A. customary units: no significant hazard is
anticipated other than incorrect estimates of distances to be traveled. Trip route will be
mapped in advance to minimize siginificant errors in estimating route length.
Differences in etiquette: Participants will be advised to appologize for gaffs.
Road conditions, drivers, insurance
Poor quality road surface
Rutted and muddy dirt roads
Participants will be advised to fit their bikes with wide touring tires that are appropriate
for all road surfaces whether paved or not.
Level of fitness, screening concerns, experience with equipment or activity
Appropriate level of fitness and riding experience for road biking over consecutive 50mile (average) days.
Participants may arrive with sub-standard equipment.
Participants may lack experience riding on roads and maintaining a sustainable pace for
several days.
Fitness and experience: The level of riding is intermediate and through trip description
and screening, we should be able to ascertain that the level of fitness is appropriate. We
have chosen late June and early July as the time for the trip because it precedes peak
tourist season but the weather is mild and fair. In addition we will have a pre-trip "get to
know you ride" where we'll be able to judge participants' preparedness.
Sub-standard equipment: We will discuss participant's gear during the initial interview
and request their gear is updated and serviced by a mechanic prior to the trip.
Riding experience. We will ascertain whether applicants are experienced with riding on
roadways shared by motorists, riding in groups, and riding for extended periods of time.
Participants will be taught to use hand signals to communicate among the group and with
vehicle traffic and to obey traffic regulations.
Conditions unique to this type of trip
This trip does not involve any particularly high risks other than moderately long
distances of riding and road traffic.
We will have daily reviews of safety and skillful riding techniques.
