Trail conditions, river crossings, weather, wildlife (bears, snakes, etc.)
The usual hazards of hiking can occur, ie tripping over rocks, roots, etc.
Stay on marked trails, observe slopes and weather changes, instruct hikers on trail safety
and etiquette. Carry rain gear, extra layers, hats, gloves, gaiters, polypro and wool layers,
first aid kit. Careful instructions in advance before hiking about how to hike in the Alps:
stay to high side of trail when you encounter people, stay away from steep grass slopes,
and keep a safe interval between hikers
Political concerns, crime, language translation, terrorism
French is the official language, English is widely spoken. Leader can communicate in
French language.
France has minimal crime other than petty crime. Recent terrorism has been a concern
in Paris and some random acts in larger centers of the country.
Participants will be cautioned against pick pockets and other petty thieves. We also
advise people to stay away from group gatherings, demonstrations and police riot
movements.
Road conditions, drivers, insurance
Usual driving hazards associated with small mountain roads
We will utilize only long established commercial transport shuttle and bus services
Level of fitness, screening concerns, experience with equipment or activity
Participants should be able to hike/walk up to seven miles with elevation gain of up to
1500 feet. No special equipment will be needed.
Health conditions will dictate what level participant will be allowed to hike. Must be a
group player and not an individualist.
Careful screening: application response, phone calls, chapter feedback, recent excursions
(local and ME/AT), list of hikes done in past 2 years. A aarticipants will need to be up
front and accurate with all health conditions and medications. Participant must be a
group player, if not he/she will put the groups safety in jeopardy and this would not be
acceptable.
Conditions unique to this type of trip
Becoming lost on path networks in the region
Ensure group hikes together with a front and rear leadership team. Balance out the levels
of hikers so there are no long delays or missed junctions on route due to stragglers.
