Iowa County 4-H Youth Council Responsibilities & Expectations The Iowa County 4-H youth council, advisors and staff are excited about inviting you, a high school freshman thru senior to join and make the Iowa County 4-H program, even more FUN and EXCITING. Iowa County Youth Council members & Advisors invites senior 4-Hers’ who meet the following requirements to join them as members of the 2013-2014 Iowa County Youth Council. It is highly recommended to attend Leadership Retreat on April 6, 2014. Must be at least a freshman in high school for the fall of 2014. Enroll in at least one (1) 4-H project at the county fair. Must attend 75% of the Youth Council meetings and activities. Must be willing to communicate with 4-H leaders, adult volunteers and 4-H members Must be willing to strengthen your leadership skills. Must be willing to have FUN & make NEW FRIENDS! Members of the Iowa County Youth Council may serve 4 years on the council if they choose. Returning youth council members will need to reapply each year. (If you choose not to reapply, you will not be a member for the New Year.) Some of the activities the Youth Council helps plan and carry out are: School Recruitment Judging Day Assistant Iowa County Fair Fair Set up Day Fair Tear down Day Regional FSQA Training 4-H Awards night New Member Night Project workshops Attendance at Conference Judging Day, Fair set-up and tear down is required. The 2014-2015 Iowa County Youth Council will be introduced and installed at the 4-H Awards Night, scheduled for November 15, 2014 in Williamsburg. Mary Veatch, County Youth Coordinator Gene Mohling, Regional Extension Director Stacy Sickles & Jenn Walz, Advisors Iowa County 4-H Youth Council Responsibilities & Expectations You, as a Youth Council member will provide leadership to county events and activities. Many of the events are done on a year to year basis, but members are encouraged to try new projects and improve upon the activities done in the past. Some responsibilities of the Youth Council: o Helping Members – County events and activities enlarge a 4-Hers’ concept of the 4-H program. Youth Council helps when they conduct county 4-H events for others 4-H members, coordinate county-wide community service efforts, encourage members to participate in 4-H beyond the county level and visit 4-H clubs throughout the year. Recruit new members thru the school recruitment program. o Helping Teen Leaders – as a teen leader yourself, it is important to assist other teen leaders when they are invited to become involve in county events and activities, or by providing them with project ideas. o Working with Club Leaders – it is important for leaders to understand the importance of a youth council member. Youth Council members can ask leaders for suggestions about activities they are planning, visit leaders training meetings and see that leaders know what the Youth Council is doing. o Parents – parent support is vital for successful county events and activities. Youth Council members’ help when they make parent feel welcomed at the event they planned, start and stop activities on time, help parents understand the purpose of the events and how 4-Hers will benefit. Meetings/Council Activities or Events: o During the past year the Youth Council met on the 2nd Sunday of the month at the Extension Office in Williamsburg. The new council will set the meeting date, time and location at the first meeting. o If you are unable to attend the meeting or council activity, it is your responsibility to notify the Extension Office 319-668-1052 or Stacy Sickles at home 319-350-0639. (common courtesy) o Attendance will be kept on each Youth Council member. Any member that has two (2) unexcused absences will have a phone call or letter sent to their parents in concern of their where about, any member with three (3) unexcused absences will no longer be a member the Youth Council. o If you are unable to attend a council sponsored activity or event it is your responsibility to find a replacement to participate in the activity or event. (common courtesy) Inappropriate behavior: If inappropriate behavior occurs, a problem solving discussion will be held. The discussion will include the 4-H member(s) involved and one or more representatives of the following: Executive Committee of the 4-H Youth Council, 4-H Youth Council Advisors, Executive Committee of the 4-H Committee, Executive Committee of the Extension Council, Parents and Staff. The discussion may result in one or more of the following consequences: Verbal or Written apology to the appropriate parties Restitution to the appropriate parties Community Service Being sent home or restricted in your activity during the remainder of the activity or event Removal from the Youth Council or removal from official duties on the Youth Council for a period not to exceed one (1) year from the date of infraction Limitation of 4-H Award eligibility Must be a positive role model for younger 4-Hers, promote a healthy and accurate image of the 4-H program, conduct yourself in a civil, law abiding manner, set a good example for others by your actions, behavior and dress, treat other youth and adults with respect and be respectful of other’s property.
