Is this proposal for a small group trip – i.e., less than 14 participants and 2
leaders or 7 participants and 1 leader? Yes
No
If yes, why is a small group proposed? We don't want to have a large group for
safety purposes when biking. We prefer to have a private home instead of hotel
rooms, and most houses do not offer 12-14 separate beds (assuming singles) in their
homes.
If a participant fee increase of more than 15% is proposed, please explain
why?

Local Transportation
Form Revised July 2011
We will begin our trip by spending the first evening and following morning in San
Francisco exploring some of the cultural and historical sites. The focus of the remainder
of our trip will be moderate paced road riding for a total of 5 days, and one day off midweek for sightseeing and relaxing. We will also offer opportunities for stopping along
our biking routes or half day experiences such as hiking in Armstrong Redwood State
Park, taking a cooking class, a soak in a hot spring, star viewing at the Robert Ferguson
Observatory and wine tasting at the multitude of wineries. We will cater to the level of
the riding of the group, and offer faster and slower paced rides.
The first night will be spent in the historic Fisherman's Wharf hostel which is owned by
National Park Service and operated by Hosteling International. We will have private
accomodations. The remainder of the week we will be in a private rental home near
Sonoma. This will be our home base and will allow us to unwind and not have to move
our accommodations (and luggage) around. The house has 6 bedrooms (sleeping for 12)
or 9 separate beds, a large kitchen, swimming pool and hot tub.
Welcome and final dinners will be at nice restaurants. The majority of dinners will be
cooked at our rental home. Cooking groups will be assigned for each evening to
spearhead the meal preparations. Breakfast and lunch will be purchased by participants.
Breakfasts will be made at the home. Lunches can be carried with us, or purchased at
cafes and delis along our bike ride route. One dinner will be included in our cooking
lesson.
We will rent two 7 passenger mini-vans. We plan to remove the rear seat in one of the

If yes, please describe below what you will do:
We will plan a weekend bike outing probably in June 2012. One idea is to do a Vermont
bed and breakfast biking tour.
This trip will provide both recreation and natural resource education opportunities.
While traveling through wine country and the state parks of northern California, we will
see many native species that do not exist in the local areas of the northeast. We will have
the opportunity to ride through a redwood forest and learn more about these magnificent
trees. We will also attend a guided night sky starwatch at an obvservatory. And finally,
we will become more proficient with oenology, viticulture and the many varietals and
wine making practices of California wineries.

RISK ASSESSMENT

Devise a plan to prevent each hazard and to respond to it if it becomes necessary. Please be very specific for each section
if applicable.
Trail conditions, river crossings, weather, wildlife (bears, snakes, etc.)
Climate/terrain
Potential hazards
Road riding accident--crash either on ones' own or with another biker or vehicle; bad
weather
Response
Participants are required to wear helmets. Leaders will carry first aid kits to bandage up
any road rash abrasions. The group will travel together while biking for safety as a
group, but set someone as the lead and the sweep to make sure we don't lose anyone
during turns, etc. We will have cell phones and access to calling 911. If there is heavy
rain, we will not plan to bike. There are plenty of other activities available, but we will
consider hiking or other cultural opportunities. If the weather turns bad while riding, we
will be riding through towns with shops and cafes, and wineries (with indoor tasting
rooms). Drivers could consider riding ahead to get the cars, or we can call a cab to pick
up the drivers who will return for the rest of the participants.

Transportation
Potential hazards
Drivers not familiar with roads; drinking and driving (or biking).
Response
We will have a minimum of two drivers for both vehicles, and preferably a third for
each. We will also have designated drivers for any time we are doing wine tastings and
driving. The typical biking day will include signficiant bike riding mileage and difficult
terrain in the mornings. Afternoons will be spent more casually with the opportunity to
do a wine tasting (while not doing signficant bike riding) or more stops in towns. A
designated driver will also be appointed for evening activities involving alcohol.
Level of fitness, screening concerns, experience with equipment or activity
Participants
Potential hazards
Not being able to complete the rides, bike breakdown/malfunction
Response
If there is rider fatigue or minor illness, leaders or other drivers can return to car and pick
up the injured/ill rider. The bike rental company provides remote flat changing service
and bike repair (but leaders also can do some of this). On some rides, we might spot a
vehicle at middle location for anyone who wants to do a shorter ride, which will also be
closer for any reason we would need access to the car. If preferred and the group desires,
we will offer shorter and longer (or faster and slower) rides.
