Executive summary
Please provide a brief
description of the trip and the
activities planned.
This trip will involve hiking inside Glacier National Park (GNP). Glacier Institute (GI),
www.glacierinstitute.org, offers hands-on, field based experiences in collaboration with
GNP. This trip includes 4 day-long courses in Glacier that are led by a GI instructor, and
accompanied by a GI staff member, while hiking on Glacier's trails. GI works with the
leaders to ensure a balance that allows learning while hiking. The other 2 hiking days
will not be full "courses" but rather "naturalist days" where GI will send one
staffmember/naturalist with us who can answer general questions and will provide
necessary permits for those hikes as well as the full "course" days. On one travel day we
plan to visit a museum and an art gallery.
In West Glacier we will stay at Glacier Institute’s Glacier Park Field Camp (GPFC).
GPFC is located just inside Glacier National Park, ½ mile from West Glacier on a bluff
overlooking the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. There are 5 rustic, basic plywood
cabins; each has 5 hostel-style twin beds with nightstands and lamps. There is a separate
bathhouse with 4 individual showers and 5 individual toilets. Other buildings house the
kitchen/dining area, the classroom and library. The sleeping cabins are not heated.
Overall, one will be “roughing it” with spartan accommodations in a beautiful location.
In Many Glacier we will stay in a local motel, double occupancy.
All meals are included in the fee. All meals at field camp will be provided and prepared
by Glacier Institute Breakfasts and suppers at Many Glacier (MG) will be eaten in
restaurants. Lunches at MG will be simple, and bought reasonably there; participants
will be instructed to supplement with energy bars from home. Participants will also be
instructed to pay cash for any alcoholic drinks at meals out.

This trip is especially rich in educational content, given that the Glacier Institute's expert
guides and naturalists will accompany all hikes and provide commentary on subjects
ranging from wildflowers to geology. Also, we plan to visit a Native American museum
and art gallery.
