LOGISTICAL DETAILS OF TRIP
Executive summary
Please provide a brief
description of the trip and the
activities planned.
Our proposed adventure will take us through England's scenic and hilly Lake District
and into the Yorkshire Dales as we walk the western half of the famous Coast to Coast
walk conceived by Alfred Wainwright. We will carry mid-sized packs with our gear and
clothing needed for walking days, and use a baggage transport service to move some
additional luggage to our rest day location and then to our final destination. We will stay
in B&B's along the way.
The group will fly (Day 0) to either London or Manchester in the UK and use trains to
reach St. Bees on the western coast of England on day 1. We will, after three days (2, 3,
4) of walking, have a rest day (5) in Grasmere. Grasmere, with dozens of shops,
galleries and accommodations, was the home of William Wordsworth, England’s most
beloved poet, and his burial site is probably the single most visited attraction.
From Grasmere we will walk four additional days (6, 7, 8, 9) to Kirkby Stephen, the end
of our walk. After an overnight there, we will use trains to return to our departure
airport. Please see attached document for further detailed description, which will form
the basis of the trip prospectus.

parks)
Revised 7/15/2016
Leaders will provide flight information to participants with advice/requirements as to
timing of arrival and departure.
In the small rural towns along the C2C walk, the B&B facilities are small; few can
accommodate a group of 12. We will use Contours (www.contours.co.uk) or similar
booking service to arrange B&B accommodations along our route to ensure
accommodations are near one another.
Breakfasts will be included in the accommodation fees. Individuals will buy packed
lunches on their own, either from the B&B or from shops in the towns. Because our
overnight stays are in small towns, restaurants able to serve our entire group may not be
available Dinners will be at individuals' own expense, allowing participants flexibility
in choice of dining. Leaders plan on doing most of the coordination each evening of
where to go to eat, and accepting the treasurer role afterward.

If yes, please describe below what you will do:
Given the spring timing, we will probably have a social meeting/potluck to discuss the
trip. A hike would be difficult to arrange, unless participants are winter hikers.
United States history and culture have their roots in England. This trip provides
participants the opportunity to see the country and meet its residents "up close and
personal." We will climb several scenic summits, cross historic rivers and visit the home
town of William Wordsworth. Much of our walk will be in the Lake District National
Park and our last two days of walking take us through a section of the Dales, passing
Sunbiggin Tarn (a favorite spot for birdwatchers) en route. We will have the opportunity
to see Kinniside Stone Circle and the ancient Shap Abbey, built in 1199. A trip to
Europe brings home the realization of just how young our own country is.

policy be for the participants?

£75 pp upon booking - Contours (should book in November for best selection of B&B );
once booked the deposit is non-refundable, so we must know the trip will run before
booking
Up to 56 days before the start date, only the deposit is forfeited
$500 with application; balance due February 29, 2008 (or in installments prior to that
date)
Our cancellation policy is based on several considerations. First, cancellation shall not
raise the cost to the other participants or to the leaders. Second, we will charge a
cancelling participant for the expenses already incurred on his/her behalf and any
unavoidable future expenses that will be incurred as a result of his/her registration,
unless they can be applied toward another acceptable participant. Third, to discourage
uncommitted people from applying for the trip, we have a schedule of minimum
cancellation penalties: zero before October 1, 2007, $150 from October 1, 2007 to

Minimum numbers
Will you still run the trip if you

Yes
No
If yes, please describe conditions:
We have submitted costing information for two alternatives - 8 participants and 10
participants and ask for the ME Committee's input as to which scenario to run. Both
scenarios have the leaders contributing about $545 each, but the participant support rates
are different. The smaller group stands a better chance of being accommodated in one or
two B&B's in each town; we might be spread over three with a larger group. We expect
groups as large as 12 (or even 10) are uncommon on this route, and so we would prefer
to keep the group size to a minimum.
