Revised 7/15/2016
WE will take easy to moderate day hikes into Joshua Tree N.P. and into the National
Forest lands of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto mountain ranges that overlook Palm
Springs, CA. Local naturalists will accompany us on several hikes to interpert desert
plants and geology.
We will stay in golf course condominiums at the Desert Princess Resort in Palm Springs.
Three or four persons will occupy each four bedroom unit. Single persons will have
individual room with bath while while couples will occupy king-bedded master suite
with private bath. Towels, and linens are provided. All units have fully equiped kitchens,
living/ dining rooms, outdoor patios and adjacent outdoor pools.
Breakfasts will be taken, and trail lunches prepared, by each participant in his/ her
condominium unit Each will purchase his/ her own breakfast and lunch supplies at one of
many nearby supermarkets. Dinners will be taken at local restaurants, of which there are
a great many. A moderately priced evening meal is included in the cost of the trip.

Will have an inductory lunch at restaurant convenient to as many participants as
possible.
As we were on the 2007 trip, we will be accompanied on two or three hikes by local
naturalists who can tell us about the varied natural history and geology of the area. Our
hikes will take us through a variety of ecosystems ranging from seven thousand foot
mountains to low deserts to high (5000') deserts. Although from a distance, the desert
appears devoid of life, in fact it is rich with plants and animals that are wonderfully
adapted to this severe environment. Canyons contain hidden palm tree oases. Dryer
regions are home to many different species of cacti and other hardy plants that vary with
altitude.
