G) Conservation/Education/Recreation:: Given that the AMC Mission Statement is as follows
Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club is America's oldest conservation and recreation
organization. We promote the protection, enjoyment, and wise use of the mountains, rivers, and trails
of the Appalachian region. We believe that the mountains and rivers have an intrinsic worth and also
provide recreational opportunity, spiritual renewal, and ecological and economic health for the
region. We encourage people to enjoy and appreciate the natural world because we believe that
successful conservation depends on this experience. We fulfill our mission through the three
interconnecting pillars of the AMC: conservation, education, and recreation
How will this major excursion meet this mission of conservation, education, and recreation?
For examples, please see <http://snebulos.mit.edu/orgs/amc/mission/>
Turkey is a cultural treasure--it has more classical ruins than either Greece or Italy. In the
months before the group's departure, an extensive introduction of the country's history and culture
will be prepared by the trip leaders and published in any or all forms of media including: print,
slide show, film/DVD, monthly newsletter. An all-day tour titled "Classical Istanbul" will
accompany our stay in the coutry's capital and will include visits to mosques, churches, museums,
local bistros, markets, and other cultural sites. Half day excursions along the coast will reach
important fishing villages and quaint towns.

D) Scouting:

Are any special skills or experience on the part of the participants required?
<If "Yes" please describe>
No
F) Couples:
Do the Leader and Co-leader have a significant personal relationship?
Yes
Sue Lach has agreed to serve as a backup leader/coleader, in the event she is required. She
intends to apply for acceptance to this trip.
4. RISK ASSESSMENT
Please assess the risks/hazards of your trip. Carefully consider each area of risk and how it
may affect your trip with specific potential hazards. Then, devise a plan to attempt to prevent
each hazard and to respond to it if it becomes necessary.
A) Climate/Terrain
Potential Hazards: Earthquakes
Response:
Turkey is a seismically active country, with earthquakes affecting all of the
country. We will form a contingency plan and leave emergency contact information with family
members. General information about natural disaster preparedness is available via the Internet
from the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at http://www.fema.gov/. The
U.S. Consulate in Istanbul can provide a Disaster Preparedness Checklist upon request to
CA_Istanbul@state.gov.
B) Foreign Countries
Potential Hazards: Language
Response:
Tours will be conducted in English and the crew of the ship will be fluent
in this language as well. There is potential to have at least one participant who speaks Turkish
(Urdu) who might be willing to act as translator, as the leaders are personally acquainted with a
native Turk, who will be invited on this trip. Leaders will learn basic words and phrases.
C) Transportation
Potential Hazards: Rough seas
Response:
Gulets are very stable water crafts - far more than a sailboat. We will
travel close to shore and, if we encounter rough seas, have options to dock in sheltered ports.
People will be given an extensive overview of safety aboard the vessel, including life jacket and
emergency evacuation training with the lifeboats.
D) Participants
Potential Hazards: Drowning
Response:
Participants will be screened to make sure they can swim. The hiking will
be minimal, so people will need to be in reasonably good physical shape with some hiking
experience.

E) Other
Potential Hazards: Pickpocketing/Terrorism
Response:
Istanbul is a large city and the participants will stand out as tourists - non
Turks. People will be advised about taking precautions when carrying money, valuables and
expensive camera equipment. Passports will be left at the hotel and people will carry photocopies.
Turkey is an Islamic country and has issues with terrorism. Right now, it is relatively stable and
there are no current travel warnings or advisories. We will monitor the State Department website
continuously in case of increased threat.
5. EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN
Please describe your plans for dealing with emergencies. Please use as much detail as
possible and attach additional sheets if necessary.
A) Emergency Communication
The boat will have radio and satellite communication, and, when in ports, there will be easy
access to telephones and emergency services. Emergency Numbers:
Police
155
Fire
110
B) Evacuation
All participants will have emergency medical evacuation insurance for major medical
emergencies. There will not be any backcountry experiences. The hiking we will be doing in
the Gulf of Fethiye will be close to an urban area, so help can be easily reached within a
couple of hours. The gulet will never be very far from shore and has a motor, so if there is a
major accident while we are at sea we can easily reach a port within an hour. Turkey has a
coast guard, so they can be called in as well to assist with any emergnecies.
C) Medical Care
The quality of medical care in Turkey's private hospital facilities has improved significantly in
the past few years, particularly in Istanbul. Turkish law prohibits foreign doctors from practicing
in Turkey, but some of the private hospitals have been recruiting Turkish doctors who have
trained and lived in the United States and Europe and who are accustomed to Western medicine.
For any serious injuries we would try to evacuate the person to another European country with
more well-recognized medical care.
Before you leave for you trip, you will need to provide a list of participants and their
emergency contacts in case something happens to someone in the field as well as an itinerary
with phone numbers (where available) in case something happens at home.
6. COST INFORMATION
A) What deposits are will be required from airlines, hotels, outfitters, etc. (and when):
Hotel and tour company in Istanbul do not need a deposit - just a credit card to hold the
reservation. Gulet company needs a 40% downpayment to lock in the dates, but money will
not be put down until trip is reasonably full.
B) What is the latest date for you to cancel and get a full refund? :

C) What is the value of the deposit you will require of the participants?
$ 800
D) What will be your cancellation policy for the participants?
Participants will be refunded only what has not yet been spent or what will not increase the
price for participants/leaders. A $50 cancellation fee will be assessed.
E) Will trip run if minimum participant count not met?
Will run trip with 12 people.
Yes
7. PRIVATE TRIPS
Are you currently (up to and including the time frame of this proposed trip) leading trips that
are “private,” i.e. not sponsored by the AMC?
No
8. AMC OUTDOORS INFORMATION
Please see <http://snebulos.mit.edu/orgs/amc/info/Trip_Notice_Rules.html> for the current rules
and schedule for submitting notices for AMC Outdoors. E-mail both the long (150 words
maximum) and short form (50 word maximum) trip announcements to goeke@space.mit.edu ,
preferably in plain text format, at the same time you submit the trip application. Although the trip
notices travel a different route to the Committee, it helps to have the notices on the web site when
the trip is reviewed.
It your trip notice is somewhat preliminary at this time, that’s OK. You have plenty of
opportunity to change it before the publication deadline. If you don’t want to have the first (long)
notice appear at the normal time – see the above referenced rules – include your special request
in the body of the e-mail containing the trip notices.
After you trip is approved, please check your trip announcements as posted on the Major
Excursions web site: http://snebulos.mit.edu/orgs/amc/ ; we cut-and-paste directly from this site
to AMC Outdoors !
9. TRIP PROPOSAL AND APPROVAL PROCESS
Trips cannot come before the Major Excursions Committee for approval unless the application is
completed and received two weeks prior to MEC meetings for review. The ME Leader’s web site
has the Handbook and all required forms: http://snebulos.mit.edu/orgs/amc/handbook/ . As a
minimum we need:
 This application form
 A detailed trip budget/costing form
In addition the following are helpful during the review process, but need only be submitted after
your proposal is accepted:
 50 and 150 word notices for AMC Outdoors
 Trip prospectus – without application forms
