TRIP DETAILS A) Executive Summary: Brief outline of trip and trip activities. We will fly into Hong Kong or Shanghai, spend 2 days, then fly to Dali to visit minority areas and travel up to Lijiang where we will hike and visit other minority areas as well as visit the Nature Conservancy office and learn about their conservation efforts in the area. We will then fly to Lhasa, Tibet via Zhongdian or Chengdu. We will spend 4 or 5 days there and explorations will include the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Sera and Drepung monasteries. Drive out to Samye Monastery and return on Yarlong Tsampo River to Lhasa in traditional wooden boats. Day hiking will be planned as part of these visits. We will then fly to Xi'an via Chengdu, spending some time at the Terra Cotta Museum and at a local school in the town where our guide resides. Last 3 days in Beijing. Tour Tian'anmen Square, Forbidden City, Summer Palace. Visit the Great Wall, Temple of Heaven, and the newly opened Capital Museum. Walking tour of old Hutong area. B) Accommodations: Please describe your plans for accommodation(s). Except for a mountain trek in Lijiang, and possibly a monastery in Tibet, we will stay in 4 star hotels with western amenities. We promote the protection, enjoyment, and wise use of the mountains, rivers, and trails of the Appalachian region. We believe that the mountains and rivers have an intrinsic worth and also provide recreational opportunity, spiritual renewal, and ecological and economic health for the region. We encourage people to enjoy and appreciate the natural world because we believe that successful conservation depends on this experience. We fulfill our mission through the three interconnecting pillars of the AMC: conservation, education, and recreation How will this major excursion meet this mission of conservation, education, and recreation? There will be considerable walking and several planned hikes. Educational opportunities abound for all our days of this visit. In addition we are very fortunate that our guide, Richard Wang, is so knowledgeable about his country. F) Outfitters: Will this trip require an outfitter? No Name: However, we will have a national guide, Richard Wang, with us throughout the trip. He will hire local guides in the areas we will visit. Safety record: Richard Wang is the General Manager of Xi'an Hi-Tech Travel Service, Xi'an, China. The company has a license from the China Tourism Administration to do international travel business, and Richard is a licensed English speaking tour guide of advanced class. Liability insurance: They have liability insurance for all persons traveling with them. $40,000 is the highest compensation allowed per person. Emergency response: Clinics and doctors are available in all hotels we are to see. First aid services are readily available. Richard also carries a cell phone with him. 3. RISK ASSESSMENT Please assess the risks/hazards of your trip. Carefully consider each area of risk and how it may affect your trip with specific potential hazards. Then, devise a plan to attempt to prevent each hazard and to respond to it if it becomes necessary. A) Climate/Terrain Potential Hazards: Minimal - changed from Oct to Sept for Tibet weather; altitude sickness in Tibet; hikes could be strenuaous for some. Response: Will hike in Lijiang before Tibet, in order to experience some gain in altitude, then do least difficult activities for 2 days in Tibet; horses available in Lijiang or could stay in town - lots to do. B) Foreign Countries Potential Hazards: Always a potential for a political "event" or bird flu scare. Response: Would cancel if necessary or rearrange travel plans. C) Transportation Potential Hazards: No driving by any group member Response: All transportation on licensed airlines, trains, buses. D) Participants Potential Hazards: Possible issue with unusual food or contracting intestinal problems Response: Will advise on medications to bring, shots to have before trip. TRIP PROPOSAL AND APPROVAL PROCESS Trips cannot come before the Major Excursions Committee for approval unless the forms are completely filled out and received three weeks prior to MEC meetings for review. Please make sure you have filled out all appropriate sections of this form completely.
