TRIP DETAILS A) Executive Summary: Brief outline of trip and trip activities. Travel a circulat route in the north west part of Hounduras by chartered small bus. Visit the capital and three small cities. One city has a mountain to climb. One has Mayan ruins. The third has a lake and waterfalls. We promote the protection, enjoyment, and wise use of the mountains, rivers, and trails of the Appalachian region. We believe that the mountains and rivers have an intrinsic worth and also provide recreational opportunity, spiritual renewal, and ecological and economic health for the region. We encourage people to enjoy and appreciate the natural world because we believe that successful conservation depends on this experience. We fulfill our mission through the three interconnecting pillars of the AMC: conservation, education, and recreation How will this major excursion meet this mission of conservation, education, and recreation? As we visit the cities we will come to understand some of the culture and economy. We will walk and hike to visit the points of interest. Visiting Copan will give an opportunity to discuss the collapse of the Mayan civilization allowing us to draw comparisons with what we see going on in modern Honduras. Yes The leader visited Honduras on a mission trip in 2006. The coleader has visited the Mayan ruins and those in nearby countries. RISK ASSESSMENT Please assess the risks/hazards of your trip. Carefully consider each area of risk and how it may affect your trip with specific potential hazards. Then, devise a plan to attempt to prevent each hazard and to respond to it if it becomes necessary. A) Climate/Terrain Potential Hazards: <Trrail conditions, weather, etc.> Response: Plans will be modified as indicated by inclement weather. B) Foreign Countries Potential Hazards: <Political concerns, crime, language translation.> Response: Honduras is politically calm and crime should not be a problem. The coleader ' s Spanish will provide adequate ability to communicate with locals C) Transportation Potential Hazards: Only in the capital are highways up to America standards. Response: A twenty passenger bus with a driver will be engaged. The leader will be part of a mission prior to the trip. The mission coordinator lives in the capital and hires such buses more than once a year. He will provide the bus reference. D) Participants Potential Hazards: Varying skills and personalities can degrade the trip experience. Response: Participants will be screened for compatibilty and acceptance of conditions in the country. This is part of the reason for the pretrip get- together. E) Other Potential Hazards: Clean food and drinking water must be provided. Malaria prevention is necessary. Response: Leaders will communicate CDC recommendations on health before the trip. Leaders will provide bottled water and caution against eating food other than that provided. Malaria and dystentry medication will be required. EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN Please describe your plans for dealing with emergencies. Please use as much detail as possible and attach additional sheets if necessary. A) Emergency Communication Group will have a cell phone usable in Honduras, Coleader speaks Spanish. Group will be accompanied by a local bus driver who can drive the group to a place where any problem can be resolved B) Evacuation There is only one away from road day hike. It is in a national park with rangers and so on. C) Medical Care The capital has three hospitals. Before you leave for you trip, you will need to provide a list of participants and their emergency contacts in case something happens to someone in the field as well as an itinerary with phone numbers (where available) in case something happens at home. 6. COST INFORMATION A) What deposits are will be required from airlines, hotels, outfitters, etc. (and when): No early deposits will be required for this trip. B) What is the latest date for you to cancel and get a full refund? : NA C) What is the value of the deposit you will require of the participants? $ 1000 D) What will be your cancellation policy for the participants? Return of all but $50 if participant is replaced. Same if cancellation is prior to November 1. After November 1, funds will be returned except for fixed costs such that remaining participants do not pay more. TRIP PROPOSAL AND APPROVAL PROCESS Trips cannot come before the Major Excursions Committee for approval unless the application is completed and received two weeks prior to MEC meetings for review.
